Lavrinovic twins lead Lietkabelis to big home win

Lietkabelis Panevezys sent a message that echoed all around the 7DAYS EuroCup by downing one of last season's semifinalists, Hapoel Bank Yahav Jerusalem, 86-72 at home in Group B on Wednesday. As last year, Lietkabelis made the most out of its home-court advantage to start the EuroCup regular season in style. Ksistof Lavrinovic paced the winners with 20 points. Lorenzo Williams added 13 and 8 assists while Gary Talton and Darjus Lavrinovic each scored 11 points for Lietkabelis. Curtis Jerrells led Jerusalem with 23 points. Austin Daye added 16 while Richard Howell had 15 for the guests, who led 40-42 at halftime. The Lavrinovic twins combined for 13 points in the third quarter, as Lietkabelis took a 69-56 lead, extended it to 80-59, and never looked back.

Williams and Ksistof Lavrinovic struck from downtown to give Lietkabelis a quick 7-0 lead. Daye hit back-to-back triples but Ksistof Lavrinovic and Williams insisted from beyond the arc to keep the hosts ahead, 15-10. Jerrells stepped up for Jerusalem and a floater by Lior Eliyahu tied it at 19-19. A dunk by Donatas Tarolis and a layup by Gintaras Leonavicius made Lietkabelis regain a 23-20 edge after 10 minutes. Daye and Jerrells fueled a 0-6 run that gave Jerusalem its first lead, 23-26, early in the second quarter. Talton followed a jumper with a layup but Jerrells and an unstoppable Daye kept the guests in charge, 30-34. Adas Juskevicius and Zanis Peiners helped Lietkabelis tie the game, 38-38, but Jerrells and Alen Omic restored a 40-42 Jerusalem edge at halftime. An alley-oop dunk by Peiners sparked an 11-2 run that Talton capped with a jumper to make Jerusalem call timeout at 56-48. Ksistof Lavrinovic remained unstoppable and got plenty of help from his twin brother Darjus and Simas Jasaitis to boost the hosts' lead to 69-56 after 30 minutes. A big basket by Jasaitis made it a 17-point game, 73-56, early in the fourth quarter. Jerusalem did not recover and a rainbow jumper by Darjus Lavrinovic sealed the outcome, 80-59, long before the final buzzer.

Lietkabelis travels to Russia to face FC Bayern Munich in regular season Round 2. Jerusalem hosts Buducnost VOLI Podgorica.

"Our goal in this game was playing aggressive due to Jerusalem's short rotation. We have a lot of players who can sub in, so our goal was to put pressure on them for 40 minutes. I told my guys at halftime to be patient and keep playing aggressive and they will get tired. Eventually, we saw that, for some minutes, Jerusalem got tired and we made it. That was our goal; we patiently waited and got this win. It is very important to start with a win in every competition we play. We got it, and I hope it will give us great confidence in future games."

“It wasn't an ideal start for us in this competition. Lietkabelis is in better game shape because played more games than us. They took advantage of our mistakes. In the beginning of the season, small details are very important. We missed a lot of shots under the basket. We weren’t strong enough. At halftime we asked for players to play harder, more physical but we weren’t smart enough. The players’ reaction wasn’t correct. We were down, we didn’t execute well. Lietkabelis is in better shape. For us it was only the second official game this season. We can learn a lot from this game and move on.”

"Honestly, I don't think we changed too much (after halftime) tactically. We just picked up our energy level, started to be more aggressive. And we have a deep roster. We have 12 guys who can play and you mix and match our lineups any way you want. Any guy can start or come off the bench, it doesn't matter. We knew it was a matter of time before we wore them down and thankfully it played out well in the second half. Curtis Jerrells is a very, very good player, Austin Daye, Dyson... I can keep going all day. They have a very talented roster and the key for us was to keep the pressure on them, make them work for every basket and, for the most part, I think we did that today. It is important for every team to win games early in the season. It is a learning experience along the way. We didn't have a defeat yet and sometimes you can learn more from losing, but with all the experienced guys we have on the team... we probably have 100 years of experience with our starting five! With our experience, I think we will be fine, even when we didn't have any setbacks yet."
