Marko Marinovic - Alba Berlin (photo albaberlin.de)_28174Alba Berlin stepped into the Last 16 on Tuesday with a 79-62 victory over Pepsi Caserta on Tuesday at o2 World in the German capital. Julius Jenkins and Marko Marinovic each recorded 14 points and 4 assists to pace the winners, last season’s Eurocup runners-up. The game was decided by an 18-1 second-quarter run led by a pair of Sven Schultze threes that put the hosts up 50-26. And Caserta never got close in the second half. Yassin Idbihi and Tadija Dragicevic added 10 points each for Berlin. Alba hosts Anwil Wloclawek knowing it can lock up first place with a win. Fabio Di Bella led Pepsi with 16 points, Eric Williams added 10 and Jumaine Jones grabbed 10 rebounds in defeat. Casertya dropped to 2-2 and hosts Krasnye Krylia in a clash with big Last 16 implications.

Di Bella got the visitors going with a steal and layup, but Berlin played patiently with Jenkins feeding Patrick Femerling twice for 4 free throws as the hosts took the lead. Idbihi upped the Alba advantage to 10-4 before Timmy Bowers got on the scoreboard. Jones made it 12-8 on the offensive glass before Berlin came back with free throws from Jenkins and Immanuel McElroy in building a double-digit lead. Lukasz Koszarek’s triple and Jones inside helped narrow the gap to 20-14 after 10 minutes. Martin Colussi further closed the deficit to 4, but Marinovic shined with a jumper and a triple to get to 27-16. Williams got involved with a basket-plus foul, but Caserta was unable to deny the home team as Dragicevic sank free throws to make it 32-23. And soon his three-pointer made it a 10-point lead again. Schultze tacked on a pair of threes and Marinovic knocked another down in a game-breaking 18-1 charge that made it 50-26. Colussi finally ended the Caserta drought to make it 50-28 at halftime.

Defensive pride was the story of the third quarter, as neither team scored in the first four-plus minutes of the second half. Di Bella finally ended the spell with a pair of free throws before Bryce Taylor converted a basket-plus-foul for the hosts. Ebi Ere heated up and tried to carry hit team back, cutting the lead to 53-37. Willimas muscled his way to points and brought Pepsi as close as 13 before Jenkins capped the third quarter at 60-45. The teams traded baskets early in the fourth quarter, with Caserta never getting closer than 64-50 after another three-point play from Williams. Then Berlin scored the next 7 points – 4 of them by Jenkins – to assume total control. At this point the outcome was clear and the fans at o2 World were able to start thinking about the Last 16 stage, with undefeated Alba marching to the finish line for its fourth straight win.

Head Coaches

PAVICEVIC, LUKA
Alba Berlin
"I think, my team was very energized and involved in how to win this game and pass through to the Last 16. it was a very strong overall effort by my team in this part of the season and I have to congratulate my team for reaching the next round so early."
SACRIPANTI, PINO
Pepsi Caserta
"When you play against a great team like Alba Berlin, you have to play well for 40 minutes, make every fast-break and easy shot. But we did so only for 30 minutes. We lost everything in the second quarter, when we did not play together and did not stick to our game plan. We took bad decisions and looked too much for individual solutions. Alba used this to break the game with their fast-breaks and open three-pointers, which they earned out of their pick & roll. I am happy for my team, in that at least we stayed together in the second half. This gives me hope for our game against Samara next week."

Players

FEMERLING, PATRICK
Alba Berlin
"To reach the Last 16, this win at home was a step in the right direction for us, especially after our bad game on Saturday. After the big lead at half time we lost our rhythm, but so did Caserta and for five minutes no single point was scored. This was not a non-aggression pact between Caserta and us: both teams simply played good defense. This second half also reminded us, that we still have a lot of work in front of us."
DI BELLA, FABIO
Pepsi Caserta
"To withstand their pressure was not easy. Alba is a team, that was close to play in the Euroleague and you could see that today. When Alba scored 30 points in the second quarter for a 22 point lead, it closed the game. For us it was important to show a reaction in the 3rd quarter, especially in defense. I think we did that successfully, as Alba scored no single point for five minutes, but unfortunately we weren't able to score, too. We have to look forward and win our game against Samara at home."
