EWE Baskets Oldenburg rides Chubb to maiden victory

EWE Baskets Oldenburg held off a late Proximus Spirou Charleroi comeback for a 72-68 victory on Tuesday evening. The win marked the first of the Eurocup season for Oldenburg, which tied Spirou at 1-3 in Group C. Adam Chubb carried the hosts early with 18 first-half points. He finished with 20 points on perfect shooting, plus 8 rebounds and 5 assists. Nemanja Aleksandrov and Rickey Paulding came together on an 8-0 third quarter run that put Oldenburg up 10. The lead reached 68-54 early in the fourth quarter, but Spirou fought back. The duo of Dylan Page and Eric Wise helped the visitors rally to within 2 in the final minute, but Paulding came through to preserve the Oldenburg win. Phillip Neumann, Paulding and Aleksandrov finished with 11 points apiece and Phillip Zwiener added 10 for the winners. Page posted 26 points and 9 rebounds and Wise scored 19 points in defeat.

Chubb dominated early with 8 points as EWE Baskets surged to a 10-3 start. Dylan Page free throws and Esben Reinholt on the offensive glass brought the visitors within 5, but Zwiener responded with a basket-plus-foul. Andre Collins scored off a steal and Reinholt fed Wise to make it 16-13. Page tied the game with a triple and Collins made another to put Spirou ahead. Reinholt’s steal led to a Wise layup and a 19-23 advantage. Neumann made it 20-23 at the end of the quarter. The elad changed hands five times in the first four minutes of the second quarter. A Zwiener three put Oldenburg ahead 31-27. Wise bumped Spirou in front again as the team continued to trade buckets. Chubb tied the score at 37-37. Chubb added free throws, but Wise kept the teams even at the break, 41-41.

Page kept the visitors close before Aleksandrov scored 5 points and Paulding hit a three in an 8-0 run that made it 55-45. Page from downtown and Wise from inside halved the Spirou deficit, but Aleksandrov put Oldenburg ahead 61-54 through three quarters. Chris Kramer scored the first 5 points of the final stanza and a Neumann layup gave EWE Baskets a 68-54 cushion. Spirou made one last run. Baskets by Page and Collins followed by Page foul shots closed the gap to 68-61. Paulding put in his own miss for Oldenburg, but Wise and Page kept chipping away. Page made it a 2-point game in the final minute, however Paulding answered with a clutch basket with 10 seconds remaining and Loic Schwartz’s missed three in the closing seconds was of little significance.

We are happy with this first win, although it did not come easy. It is a difficult situation for us, with all these players out. A win with a bigger margin would have been possible, but if you look at our three-point percentage, it is not a surprise having difficulties against a zone defense. I have to compliment Chris Kramer, who had to play more than 35 minutes again and still led us to our first victory. Having Julius Jenkins, Casper Ware and Maurice Stuckey back will be crucial for our team. Our plan was to look for our advantages under the basket. Adam Chubb and Philipp Neumann had a great game again. When Charleroi played man to man, our plan worked out perfectly, when they switched to zone, we were not patient enough and forced some shots.
STAS, JACQUES
Proximus Spirou Charleroi
"We knew, it would be a tough away game, because of the situation Oldenburg had to face in the Eurocup. I think it was just a question of momentum; this will for sure not be their last win. I saw them a few times in the German League and they played spectacular. Our team had 14 turnovers, allowed 15 offensive rebounds. Losing by 4 is a result you have to be happy with under these circumstances."
