Defense gets CAI Zaragoza comfortably past Ulm

CAI Zaragoza improved to 3-1 in Group C with 69-59 win over the visiting ratiopharm Ulm on Wednesday night. The hosts took the lead for good with an 8-0 run early in the third quarter, the pulled away to a 14-point margin, 63-49, at the midway point of the fourth quarter, and never looked back. Joan Sastre led in victory with 16 points. Isaac Fotu had 13 points, while Henk Norel collected 10 points and 8 rebounds. Da'Sean Butler had 15 points, and Raymar Morgan added 11 plus 8 rebounds in the losing effort.

Butler and Salva Arco buried three-pointers to give Ulm good start into the game, but Norel and Stevan Jelovac each scored twice, while Nate Linhart knocked down a three-pointer, 11-8. Morgan and Butler scored for the visitors, but Robin Benzing, Sek Henry made baskets for the hosts, and Norel scored to make it 21-19 after 10 minutes. Henry hit again, this time from long range, and Norel scored twice more, opening up 28-21 margin. Butler nailed a three for Ulm, and after Benzing and Taylor Braun traded baskets, another Butler’s three-pointer made it 30-30. A put-back from David Brembly helped put Ulm in front 32-36, but Sastre hit from behind the arc for CAI, giving it a slim 37-36 advantage at the break.

Morgan opened the scoring for Ulm in the third period, but Fotu strung together six points for the hosts that did not allow another basket for almost 6 minutes. Sastre capped an 8-0 run that got CAI to 45-38. Augustine Rubit snapped Ulm’s drought, and Braun added to the tally, but Sastre hit a triple that gave the hosts 50-43 after 30 minutes. Halil Kanacevic and Drake Diener scored early in the fourth to make the first double-digit margin of the night, 54-43. Morgan scored four points for the visitors, but Fotu and Kanacevic extended it to 63-49 with 5 minutes left to play. Arco, brambly and DeAndre Kane kept Ulm’s hopes alive, and Braun cut it to 64-57 with 1:40 to go. But that is as close as Ulm got, as Fotu and Sastre sealed the deal with free throws.

Head Coaches

RUIZ, JOAQUIN
CAI Zaragoza
"I am happy because we were able to get an important win in the Eurocup and managed to stay undefeated in our home court. We were not brilliant on offense in the first half, but did well on defense. We improved in the third quarter and the fact that Sek (Henry) was back allowed Tomas (Bellas) to feel more comfortable and give us a lot of intensity on defense. We had an outstanding second half on defense because a team that had been scoring a lot only had 59 points against us."
LEIBENATH, THORSTEN
ratiopharm Ulm
"I want to congratulate CAI Zaragoza for the win. I think we showed a lot of character because our starting point guard and shooting guard were not available tonighy. The team played together and played an aggressive game. Besides, Taylor Braun just came back from injury, he had to at the point guard position and did really well. CAI was the better team in general terms. I think that Tomas Bellas's defense made the difference, and that fact that we allowed 8 offensive rebounds in the second quarter. We rebounded well in general terms but those 8 rebounds are too many and that hurt us, because it didn't allow us to get the lead at halftime. We didn't shoot well enough to have options to win the game. Even with all that, we played a good game, especially on defense, most of the way."

Players

FOTU, ISAAC
CAI Zaragoza
"Tomas Bellas is a great point guard and has a lot of experience. It is very easy to play with him because passing the ball is always his first option. I am feeling more comfortable as the season goes on, on the court and with my teammates. Our coach is trusting me more and more and I hope to keep improving throughout the season."
ARCO, SALVA
ratiopharm Ulm
"We competed really well, especially in the first half, even when we were without our starting backcourt and that we had a player who had returned to practice this week. We have some rebounding problems and when you give a team like CAI second-chance options, they are going to make the most out of it. We tried to cut our deficit as much as we can and lost by 10. CAI Zaragoza is the fair winner and we have to keep working and bring our injured players back."
