Defense gets CAI Zaragoza comfortably past Ulm
CAI Zaragoza improved to 3-1 in Group C with 69-59 win over the visiting ratiopharm Ulm on Wednesday night. The hosts took the lead for good with an 8-0 run early in the third quarter, the pulled away to a 14-point margin, 63-49, at the midway point of the fourth quarter, and never looked back. Joan Sastre led in victory with 16 points. Isaac Fotu had 13 points, while Henk Norel collected 10 points and 8 rebounds. Da'Sean Butler had 15 points, and Raymar Morgan added 11 plus 8 rebounds in the losing effort.
Butler and Salva Arco buried three-pointers to give Ulm good start into the game, but Norel and Stevan Jelovac each scored twice, while Nate Linhart knocked down a three-pointer, 11-8. Morgan and Butler scored for the visitors, but Robin Benzing, Sek Henry made baskets for the hosts, and Norel scored to make it 21-19 after 10 minutes. Henry hit again, this time from long range, and Norel scored twice more, opening up 28-21 margin. Butler nailed a three for Ulm, and after Benzing and Taylor Braun traded baskets, another Butler’s three-pointer made it 30-30. A put-back from David Brembly helped put Ulm in front 32-36, but Sastre hit from behind the arc for CAI, giving it a slim 37-36 advantage at the break.
Morgan opened the scoring for Ulm in the third period, but Fotu strung together six points for the hosts that did not allow another basket for almost 6 minutes. Sastre capped an 8-0 run that got CAI to 45-38. Augustine Rubit snapped Ulm’s drought, and Braun added to the tally, but Sastre hit a triple that gave the hosts 50-43 after 30 minutes. Halil Kanacevic and Drake Diener scored early in the fourth to make the first double-digit margin of the night, 54-43. Morgan scored four points for the visitors, but Fotu and Kanacevic extended it to 63-49 with 5 minutes left to play. Arco, brambly and DeAndre Kane kept Ulm’s hopes alive, and Braun cut it to 64-57 with 1:40 to go. But that is as close as Ulm got, as Fotu and Sastre sealed the deal with free throws.
