Lietkabelis road win assures it Top 16

7DAYS EuroCup newcomer Lietkabelis Panevezys joined a select group of early qualifiers to the Top 16 on Wednesday by downing MZT Skopje Aerodrom 80-87 on the road in Group A. The victory lifted Lietkabelis to a 3-2 record and a second-place tie with Cedevita Zagreb. But by virtue of its two victories over 0-5 MZT, however, Lietkabelis is assured at least fourth place in any tie situations and therefore has advanced to the Top 16. Gintaras Leonavicius led the winners with 19 points and 9 rebounds. Mindaugas Lukauskis followed with 16 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists. Donatas Tarolis added 13 points, while Lorenzo Williams had 11 and 8 assists. For MZT, Daniel Clark and Stefan Sinovec scored 20 each, Xavier Thames 16, Josh Scott 12 and Souleyman Diabate 10.

It was a tight game through one quarter, 20-21, thanks to a late basket by Sinovec. Lukauskis and Tarolis scored 4 points each in a 0-12 run for Lietkabelis to open the second quarter and take control of the scoreboard. The visitors kept padding that difference until 30-46 at halftime. Leonavicius opened the second half with back-to-back threes as the visitors' lead ballooned to 32-56 before MZT's Thames, Clark, Sinovec and Scott reeled it back to 49-62 after 30 minutes. A triple by Clark and two baskets by Thames got MZT within 59-66 midway through the fourth and Souleyman's 4 in a row capped a 13-3 run that had the hosts as close as 64-69. Despite 5 points from Leonavicius, it was still a five-point game, 74-79, with 2 minutes left, after which Lukauskis guided his team down the stretch to the victory.

“We made a lot of mistakes in the second quarter, that players at this level shouldn't do. In the second half we played very good in defense, but we couldn't to overcome the negatives from first part of the game. Basketball is like that, one or two balls decide the game; our opponent made a couple of three pointers and that was it. But, the way we played in the second 20 minutes gives me hope that the better days are in front of us.”
