Teodosic's career night leads CSKA to big win

CSKA Moscow stayed undefeated at home in the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague by downing Baskonia Vitoria Gasteiz 112-84 in the Russian capital on Friday. CSKA remained atop the standings with an 8-1 record and got its 16th consecutive home win in the competition, while Baskonia dropped to 5-4. It was a special night for Milos Teodosic, in which he dished his 1,000th assists in the competition and also had career-best 34 points. He made it a double-double with 10 assists and recorded a performance index ranking of 43, which is second-best in club history. Vitaly Fridzon added 14 points, while James Augustine had 13 for CSKA, which broke its own club scoring record in the competition, which it set just last week with 109 points against Galatasaray Odeabank Istanbul. Rodrigue Beaubois led Baskonia with 19 points, Shane Larkin added 18, Adam Hanga had 12 and Toko Shengelia 10 for the visitors. CSKA outrebounded Baskonia 36-22 and dished 26 assists.

Hanga got Baskonia going with a driving layup and Larkin followed a jumper with a three-pointer for a 0-7 start. Teodosic and Nikita Kurbanov stepped up for CSKA, but an alley-oop layup by Johannes Voigtmann and back-to-back triples by Chase Budinger and Hanga made it a double-digit game, 6-18. Kurbanov dunked and Teodosic added a three-pointer, but an unstoppable Larkin and consecutive baskets by Beaubois kept Baskonia way ahead, 17-27, after 10 minutes. CSKA found a go-to guy in Fridzon, who got help from Cory Higgins to bring CSKA a bit closer, 26-30. Shengelia dunked and Beaubois added a layup to give Baskonia some fresh air at 31-36. It didn't last long, however, as Teodosic had 5 points in a 7-0 run that he capped with a triple to give CSKA its first lead, 38-36. Kurbanov kept pushing CSKA, Teodosic made free throws and a three-pointer by Misha Kulagin gave the hosts a 49-46 lead at halftime. Three-pointers by Andrey Vorontsevich and Teodosic boosted the hosts' lead to 57-51 soon after the break. Baskonia kept struggling to score and an unstoppable Teodosic followed a layup-plus-foul with a four-point play to break the game open at 67-53. Larkin and Shengelia tried to change things for Baskonia, but Fridzon, Augustine and Kyle Hines kept CSKA in charge, 83-69, after 30 minutes. Teodosic found Fridzon for an easy basket, struck from downtown and fed Vorontsevich for another triple that sealed the outcome, 91-71, with over seven minutes left. Baskonia kept trying, but the CSKA fans had plenty of time to celebrate a big win on a night full of records!

"Congratulations to my team and all of my players for the win and the outstanding performance, especially in the last three quarters. We knew that before this game - and I am not using this as an excuse – that Baskonia had a Spanish League home game on Sunday and we had to play on the road on Monday. They had more days to prepare and relax. I don't know if it was that, but we gave up a lot of easy things; we were not aggressive on the boards in the first quarter and they hit big shots, 5 of 7 from three-point range in that first quarter. We talked about that, but gave them a lot of easy things. We had reactions, but not actions. We wanted to be active defensively. The results of three quarters, second, third and fourth, talks a bit about how we changed the chip and the approach to the game defensively and offensively. We outscored them, outran them, outrebounded them and the score was 96-57 in these three quarters. We had 16 offensive rebounds and they had 17 defensive rebounds. I know it was a day of records, but my players don't care about that. It is not about the individual records, it is all about CSKA and we are looking forward to breaking records all together. Milos had an outstanding night, offensively and defensively. He had some records tonight - congratulations to him for passing the 1,000-assist mark, but I want to mention the extremely good job that James Augustine did at both ends. He gave us the tone that it was necessary, chasing loose balls, just like Nikita Kurbanov. Both players combined for 20 rebounds, that is a huge thing for the team, a huge contribution. Everybody did exactly what was necessary to win this game, with the performance we had. I cannot tell you details about our halftime meeting, but we watched details, what we had done wrong and right, because that second quarter we won 32-18 was the opposite that we did in the first quarter. Overall, we have beaten a very good team; the EuroLeague is not a walk in the park, especially for us, the reigning champion."

"We started the game well, trying to put big players in the perimeter so that they cannot circulate the ball the way they usually do. After that, when we were leading by 10, 12 points, we have given CSKA the opportunity to come back to the game, maybe too soon, missing two, three layups and not punishing them when we should. When you are leading easily and then the other team reacts very well after seven, eight minutes to immediately come back to the game, maybe you get frustrated and cannot play the same way. In the second half, they have given us a lesson on how to play at this kind of level. They played really, really well and we were frustrated doing the things that we usually do. They played excellent; Congratulations to CSKA. We started the game well, trying to put big players in the perimeter so that they cannot circulate the ball the way they usually do."

"I did not know I passed 1,000-assist mark in my career. It is a good feeling, but most important thing is that we won and we beat one very good team. I was scared before the game because I knew Baskonia plays tough and is a very good basketball team. We played good as a team and that is a reason we won tonight."
