Valencia downs Ulm again, qualifies to Top 16

Valencia Basket made it to the 7DAYS EuroCup Top 16 by thrashing ratiopharm Ulm 60-86 on the road in Group C on Wednesday. Valencia improved to 4-1 and earned its chance to keep fighting for EuroCup glory, while Ulm dropped to 3-2 and saw its three-game winning streak come to an end. Fernando San Emeterio led the winners with 19 points off the bench. Romain Sato added 14 while Slava Kravtsov had 12 and 9 rebounds for Valencia. Taylor Braun led Ulm with 16 points and Raymar Morgan added 15. Defense was the biggest key for Valencia, as it limited Ulm to very poor shooting percentages. The hosts made just 12 of 36 two-point shots (33.3%) and 9 of 28 from downtown (32.1%). Valencia also outrebounded Ulm 24-43 – including 35 defensive boards, a EuroCup season-high in that category.

A dunk by Kravtsov ignited a 0-11 run, which Guillem Vives capped with free throws. Ulm was held scoreless for four minutes until Braun struck twice from downtown, but Sato and Joan Sastre kept Valencia way ahead, 9-22. Valencia kept excelling on defense and free throws by Rafa Martinez fixed the score at 9-24 after 10 minutes. Braun and Karsten Tadda hit back-to-back triples early in the second quarter and three-point play by Morgan gave Ulm hope at 18-26. Martinez and Sastre struck from downtown and free throws by Vives and San Emeterio kept the guests way ahead, 25-36. San Emeterio followed an off-balance shot with a dunk to cause Ulm to call timeout at 28-40. Morgan singlehandedly kept the hosts within 34-45 at halftime. Kravtsov followed a big slam with a dunk-and-foul to break the game open at 34-50, soon after the break. Sato struck from downtown and Pierre Oriola made it a 21-point game, 36-57. Braun and Braydon Hobbs tried to change things for the hosts, but Valencia kept scoring fluently and a three-pointer by Martinez gave the guests a 49-67 margin after 30 minutes. Morgan led an 8-0 run that caused Valencia to call timeout at 57-67. Kravtsov and San Emeterio fueled a 0-11 run that sealed the outcome, 57-78, long before the final buzzer.

"Pointers, took to many threes and only went 11 times to the free-throw line. To be fair, I have to say that Valencia’s defense made the difference. We did not play physically from the start, we came out of halftime too soft and we did not play physically at the end. Today we had not enough guys that put their heart on the court and really showed that they want the win.”
MARTINEZ, PEDRO
Valencia Basket
"First of all, I think we played great defense. We denied their passes, we were consistent in defensive rebounding and that means we had a lot of options for fastbreak situations. We respected Ulm, they have a very good team. But we showed a better performance, especially on defense. I think this was the biggest difference."

Players

FERNER, JOSCHKA

"We lost the game in the beginning. Starting 0-11 was the key. Even though we managed to come back in the game, Valencia showed its class and finished the game very strong."
DIOT, ANTOINE
Valencia Basket
"We expected a tough game because we had a lot of respect for Ulm – especially after they beat Jerusalem. But we started the game well and had not too many downs during the stretch. Me not playing the first 20 minutes is not a problem at all. I think this just shows how deep our roster is. "
