Defending Euroleague Basketball Nike International Junior Tournament champion FMP survived a tough test by edging Alba Berlin 62-61 in Group B on Tuesday. FMP joins Unicaja atop the Group B standings and both teams are set to face each other tomorrow at 14:15 CET, in what is already a highly-anticipated showdown. Dejan Musli paced the winners with 22 points and 9 rebounds. Aleksandar Ponjavic added 11 points for FMP but Branislav Djekic became the game hero by hitting the game-winning basket in the final seconds. Malte Ziegenhagen led ALba with 18 points Dawit Villarzu, Niels Giffey and Konstantin Klein each added 12 points for the hosts. Alba rolled early in the game, as FMP failed to get Musli involved. Alba led 14-21 after 10 minutes and made it a double-digit game, 26-26, soon after that. Musli stepped up with 8 unanswered points in a 10-0 run that brought FNMP back to life, 26-28, at halftime. Nothing changed in the third quarter, as Alba kept playing hard and managed to keep a slim lead. Even with that, Aleksandar Ponjevic gave FMP a 42-40 edge after 30 minutes. Ziegenhagen hit free throws and soon added consecutive three-pointers in a 0-12 run that Giffey capped with a layup-plus-foul for a 49-58 Alba edge with 3 minutes to go. FMP needed a miracle comeback but showed the heart of a champion, playing its best basketball at the right moment. Musli and Filip Duran helped FMP to tie it at 60-60 with 17 seconds to go. Klein drew a foul but made just 1-for-2 free throws. Djekic scored in the other end while Sebastian Fulle missed from downtown at the buzzer.
