Andorra pulls away from Ulm after waisting big lead

MoraBanc Andorra blew a 22-point lead, but used a fourth-quarter run to take a big step towards the Top 16 with an 87-99 victory at ratiopharm Ulm. Andorra regained control of the game with a 3-15 surge in the final frame to move to 4-3 in Group A. Clevin Hannah paced five Andorra players in double figures with 20 points and 8 assists, Dejan Todorovic and David Walker both had 17 points, Frantz Massenat scored 16 and Nacho Llovet added 10 points. Ulm dropped to 1-6 despite 19 points and 7 rebounds from Isaiah Briscoe. Killian Hayes tallied 19 points and 6 assists, Andrea Obst added 14 points and both Grant Jerrett and Seth Hinrichs chipped in 10 points in the loss.

Andorra’s first 4 points were matched by Ulm to even the game early, but then the visitors nailed 3 three-pointers in a 0-13 run to pull ahead 4-17. Christoph Philipps snapped a 4-minute scoreless drought for Ulm, but Andorra kept hitting from long range with Jeremy Senglin and Hannah on target. Walker’s three-point play made it 11-26. Per Guenther tried to keep Ulm close with a pair of three-pointers in scoring 9 points as the hosts went down 17-30 after 10 minutes. The long-range barrage continued with Todorovic and Walker connecting to push the margin to 19-38. Hinrichs scored 5 straight points for Ulm, but Massenat and Walker both hit from deep and an 0-6 surge increased the Andorra advantage to 28-50. Ulm was able to put together some stops defensively and Briscoe tallied 7 points in an 11-1 run over more than 3 minutes to pull within 39-51. Walker ended the first half with a three-pointer and Andorra headed to the locker room up 39-54.

Andorra had a strong start to the second half with Walker’s big dunk and-one making it 41-59 and two Hannah scores leaving the visitors up 46-63. Ulm worked its way back into the game with a 17-4 run thanks to three-pointers from Obst and Briscoe and 5 points from Hayes to pull within 63-69. An unsportsmanlike foul on Walker resulted in 4 points for Ulm and Briscoe’s triple just before the buzzer had Ulm down just 73-74 after 30 minutes. Hayes drained a three to give Ulm the lead 76-75 early in the fourth quarter, but Andorra started to stamp its authority with Tyson Perez and Llovet combining for 11 points in 3-15 run over the next 6 minutes for a 79-90 advantage with 3 minutes to play. Jerrett stopped Ulm’s scoring problems, but Massenat answered with a three-point play and Todorovic added 4 points as Ulm could not get back into the game.

No show by Willis

Derek Willis came into the game as Ulm’s second-leading scorer with 14.2 points per game, but the forward was held scoreless in 12:26 minutes, attempting only 1 three-pointer and grabbing 1 rebound with 2 turnovers and 1 block.

Strong Briscoe debut

While Ulm desperately missed Derek Willis's usual production - especially with Zoran Dragic out again, Isaiah Briscoe was excellent in his EuroCup debut with his new team, scoring 19 points including 3 three-pointers, 7 rebounds and 1 assist.

Telling numbers

Andorra was on fire offensively, shooting 68.8 percent on two-point shots and 57.1% (12 of 21) on three-pointers. Andora also forced Ulm into 19 turnovers.

Next games

Ulm will head out on the road in hopes of beating Promitheas Patras on Wednesday, November 20 for its second victory in the group. Andorra meanwhile faces a tough test that same night when it hosts Segafredo Virtus Bologna.

"We had a bad start without any kind of intensity. We said before the game the first thing we need to do is to match their intensity. So the intensity was totally off and that’s why Andorra opened a big lead. I’m very proud of the reaction that the players had, especially stepping up on the defensive end. With the intensity, we got stops, we got baskets, we got confidence, and the momentum turned our way. In the fourth quarter, we tried to press, but we were not successful. We didn’t work as we planned, and in the end, when the game was down to the wire, we again took a step back on defense and executed poorly. But you have to give credit to Andorra. They played a good game. They shot 57 percent from three-point range, which is amazing. And in the end, they deserve the win."
NAVARRO, IBON

"There are two teams on the court. I don’t know if we relaxed so much. But they were more accurate on threes and we were scared a little of their open-court game and our defensive transition was not the best in the third quarter. But it was not only our mistakes. They were playing at home and we had to expect the reaction they had in the third quarter. But in the last quarter, the team showed character and that they know how to play the final minutes. We had 30 good minutes in this game.

"We expected the reaction of ratiopharm Ulm in the third quarter especially because they are a quality team, are well-coached, and are playing at home. And we knew their scoring would increase in the third quarter. The best thing is that in the last quarter we were able to pull back and reset and get back to our basic things. The defensive transition was the main problem in the third quarter and the control of the rebounds. It’s a very important victory for us to keep our chances of qualifying for the Top 16 and to clinch a better position."

"We kind of relaxed in the third quarter. We let them get some confidence and momentum and they’re a good team with good players who can make things happen and that’s what they did. We regained focus on the defensive end. Everybody just locked in on defense and that’s how we came out with the win."
