Andorra pulls away from Ulm after waisting big lead
MoraBanc Andorra blew a 22-point lead, but used a fourth-quarter run to take a big step towards the Top 16 with an 87-99 victory at ratiopharm Ulm. Andorra regained control of the game with a 3-15 surge in the final frame to move to 4-3 in Group A. Clevin Hannah paced five Andorra players in double figures with 20 points and 8 assists, Dejan Todorovic and David Walker both had 17 points, Frantz Massenat scored 16 and Nacho Llovet added 10 points. Ulm dropped to 1-6 despite 19 points and 7 rebounds from Isaiah Briscoe. Killian Hayes tallied 19 points and 6 assists, Andrea Obst added 14 points and both Grant Jerrett and Seth Hinrichs chipped in 10 points in the loss.
Andorra’s first 4 points were matched by Ulm to even the game early, but then the visitors nailed 3 three-pointers in a 0-13 run to pull ahead 4-17. Christoph Philipps snapped a 4-minute scoreless drought for Ulm, but Andorra kept hitting from long range with Jeremy Senglin and Hannah on target. Walker’s three-point play made it 11-26. Per Guenther tried to keep Ulm close with a pair of three-pointers in scoring 9 points as the hosts went down 17-30 after 10 minutes. The long-range barrage continued with Todorovic and Walker connecting to push the margin to 19-38. Hinrichs scored 5 straight points for Ulm, but Massenat and Walker both hit from deep and an 0-6 surge increased the Andorra advantage to 28-50. Ulm was able to put together some stops defensively and Briscoe tallied 7 points in an 11-1 run over more than 3 minutes to pull within 39-51. Walker ended the first half with a three-pointer and Andorra headed to the locker room up 39-54.
Andorra had a strong start to the second half with Walker’s big dunk and-one making it 41-59 and two Hannah scores leaving the visitors up 46-63. Ulm worked its way back into the game with a 17-4 run thanks to three-pointers from Obst and Briscoe and 5 points from Hayes to pull within 63-69. An unsportsmanlike foul on Walker resulted in 4 points for Ulm and Briscoe’s triple just before the buzzer had Ulm down just 73-74 after 30 minutes. Hayes drained a three to give Ulm the lead 76-75 early in the fourth quarter, but Andorra started to stamp its authority with Tyson Perez and Llovet combining for 11 points in 3-15 run over the next 6 minutes for a 79-90 advantage with 3 minutes to play. Jerrett stopped Ulm’s scoring problems, but Massenat answered with a three-point play and Todorovic added 4 points as Ulm could not get back into the game.
No show by Willis
Derek Willis came into the game as Ulm’s second-leading scorer with 14.2 points per game, but the forward was held scoreless in 12:26 minutes, attempting only 1 three-pointer and grabbing 1 rebound with 2 turnovers and 1 block.
Strong Briscoe debut
While Ulm desperately missed Derek Willis's usual production - especially with Zoran Dragic out again, Isaiah Briscoe was excellent in his EuroCup debut with his new team, scoring 19 points including 3 three-pointers, 7 rebounds and 1 assist.
Telling numbers
Andorra was on fire offensively, shooting 68.8 percent on two-point shots and 57.1% (12 of 21) on three-pointers. Andora also forced Ulm into 19 turnovers.
Next games
Ulm will head out on the road in hopes of beating Promitheas Patras on Wednesday, November 20 for its second victory in the group. Andorra meanwhile faces a tough test that same night when it hosts Segafredo Virtus Bologna.
