Snaidero Udine took a huge step towards advancement to the elimination rounds from Group B with a 65-71 road win over Besiktas Cola Turka on Tuesday in Istanbul. The visitors won the game in the last minute, scoring the last 4 points, while Besiktas missed its last four shots. Snaidero improved to 4-3, taking a two-game lead over fifth-place Besiktas, whose record fell to 2-5. Since Udine won both games between them, it also holds tiebreak advantages over Besiktas. Udine used a balanced attack, led by Jacob Jaacks with 15 points and 6 rebounds. Kristaps Valters had 13 points, 7 rebounds and 8 assists, Larry O'Bannon added 13 and Damon Williams finished with 12 points, 6 rebounds and 4 steals. Aubrey Reese led Besiktas with 21 points and Brooks Sales added 16 points, 8 rebounds and 5 steals.
A balanced first quarter saw Udine take an early 4-7 lead on a three-pointer by Williams. Besiktas took its own the first lead at 11-9 on a basket by Reese and put on zone defensive pressure for the remaining 2 minutes of the first quarter. It worked well for the hosts, as Udine suffered several consecutive turnovers and Baris Guney's three-pointer completed an 8-0 run for Besiktas. Jaacks broke the silence for Udine with a layup before the first quarter ended 22-16 in favor of Besiktas. Early in the second, a dunk by Williams completed a 3-9 burst that drew Udine within 26-23, but a minute later, Erdal Bibo's three-pointer increased the Besiktas lead again to 29-23. Udine responded with its own zone defense, putting pressure on the hosts and closing the difference little by little until Joel Zacchetti's jumper from the post levelled the score once again at 32-32. Sales and Williams exchanged jump shots before Kristaps Valters fed Michele Antonutti for a dunk that pushed Udine in front again, 34-36, at the half.
Besiktas roared out after halftime with a 7-0 push capped by another triple from Bibo to lead 41-36. After that, however, Udine's defense tighteneed again and held Besiktas without a point for nearly 4 minutes. In that time, it was Udine going on a 0-9 run led by O'Bannon's pair of three-point bombs to seize its own new lead, 41-45. Sales kept Besiktas in touch with the visitors but it was Valters making a pair of late baskets to keep Udine in charge, 49-51, after 30 minutes. To start the fourth quarter, Djuro Ostojic scored and Guney connected on another triple for a 5-0 shot in the arm that put Besiktas ahead again, 54-51. Aggressive man-to-man defense by the hosts now kept Udine scoreless for more than 5 minutes. But the visitors came out of their slump with a huge four-point play - a triple and free throw - by Jaacks, to vault into the lead again with just 4 minutes to go. Valters sooned added his own three-pointer from the right side to make it 56-60, although Reese answered with the same for Besiktas. Free throws by Jaacks free throws kept Snaidero safe at 59-64, and then his offensive rebounding negated some good zone pressure on the part of Besiktas. With 1 minute, 11 seconds left, Reese's free throws cut the differance to 61-64, and shortly after, he hit a nother pair to make it 65-67. Reese tried a three-pointer to tie with 30 seconds left, but missed, as did Guney and Derya Yannier down the stretch as Udine used O'Bannon's free throws to hold onto a huge 65-71 road win.
