Lapornik's huge fourth quarter leads RETAbet to second win

RETAbet Bilbao Basket got plenty of fresh air in Group B by edging ALBA Berlin 88-92 in front of over 8,500 fans in the German capital on Wednesday. Bilbao improved to 2-3 in Group B, while ALBA dropped to 3-3. Miha Lapornik led the winners by scoring 14 of his 18 points in the fourth quarter, including back-to-back-to-back three-pointers to bring RETAbet back in the game early in that period. Ivan Buva added 14 points, Alex Mumbru 11 and Axel Hervelle 10 for RETAbet. Neils Giffey and Elmedin Kikanovic paced ALBA with 20 points apiece. Dragan Milosavljevic added 16 points and Peyton Siva had 12 for the hosts. RETAbet dished 24 assists and committed just 8 turnovers, in one of the biggest keys to this exciting game.

Giffey stepped up with a couple of driving layups and got plenty of help from Siva and Kikanovic to give ALBA a 16-7 lead. Jonathan Tabu and Mumbru buried back-to-back triples and consecutive layups by Borja Mendia brought RETAbet within 21-17. Kikanovic stepped up with 5 quick points and free throws by Ismet Akpinar boosted ALBA's lead to 28-19 after 10 minutes. Buva banked in a three-pointer early in the second quarter and Michael Eric dunked twice to bring Bilbao within 3. Free throws by an unstoppable Eric soon completed the guests' comeback at 34-35. Kikanovic kept pushing ALBA, but Dejan Todorovic followed a triple with a tip-in for a 38-40 Bilbao lead. Milosavljevic singlehandedly restored a 46-44 ALBA lead at halftime. Giffey took over after the break and Akpinar solved a broken play with a jumper for a 53-48 ALBA lead. A layup by Mumbru soon tied it at 53-53. Engin Atsur struck from downtown and got help from Kikanovic and Milosavljevic to give ALBA some fresh air at 65-57. Buva and Jonathan Tabu fueled a 0-7 Bilbao run, but three-pointers by Siva and Milosavljevic fixed the score at 71-66 after 30 minutes. Lapornik struck three times from downtown to force ALBA to call timeout at 75-75. Lapornik hit a jumper and Buva added consecutive put-back baskets for a 75-81 Bilbao edge with four minutes left. Atsur and Tobias Borg traded triples and Scott Bamforth struck from downtown for a 78-87 Bilbao lead. ALBA got within 88-91, but Lapornik sealed the outcome - and his fantastic fourth quarter - from the foul line.

ALBA Berlin
"We started well on offense and defense, but in the second quarter Bilbao started playing better defense. We had problems to create on offense and lost our patience. At halftime we talked about that and reacted well and with patience again. But then the same thing happened in the fourth quarter. We didn’t find good options to score and lost our rhythm. We still played good defense, but then gave away the rebounds. Overall my team fought well, but in the end we should have been smarter."
DURAN, CARLES
RETAbet Bilbao Basket
"I am very happy for the win. It was really difficult for us as ALBA played very good. In the first quarter they played very hard, but in the second we also improved in this aspect. During the third quarter, ALBA put us under full court pressure, but we managed to stay in the game. In the end an incredible offensive performance by Lapornik and very good team defense helped us to get away with the win."
