Higgins, Clyburn lead CSKA past Madrid

In a battle of Turkish Airlines EuroLeague powerhouses - and the two winningest teams in competition history, CSKA Moscow downed Real Madrid 88-93 in the Spanish capital on Thursday. CSKA improved to 9-1 in the standings, while Madrid dropped to 8-2. Cory Higgins led the winners with 24 points, Will Clyburn added 18, Nando De Colo had 15 and Alec Peters 11 for CSKA. Facu Campazzo led Madrid with 21 points, Rudy Fernandez added 18 and Felipe Reyes had 10 for the hosts.

Peters struck from downtown in a 0-7 opening run that Daniel Hackett capped with free throws. De Colo added consecutive three-pointers, Othello Hunter dunked and a layup by Clyburn caused Madrid to call timeout at 3-17. Campazzo and Jaycee Carroll stepped up for Madrid and a turnaround jumper by Anthony Randolph prompted CSKA to stop the game at 12-20. Fernandez hit a step-back triple and Campazzo added a three-quarters court bomb at the first quarter buzzer to make it 20-24 after 10 minutes. A layup by Reyes and a jumper by Jaycee Carroll gave Madrid its first lead, 26-24, early in the second quarter. Reyes kept pacing Madrid with a jump hook and Gustavo Ayon added a layup that boosted the hosts' lead to 32-24. Hunter rescued CSKA with a layup and three-pointers by Peters and Clyburn tied it at 32-32, after an 8-0 run. Peters sank another from beyond the arc and Hackett did the same for a 37-38 CSKA edge. Free throws by Ayon and a put-back layup by Fernandez restored a 41-38 Madrid lead at halftime. Gabriel Deck and Jeffery Taylor took over after the break, but Peters and De Colo kept CSKA within 49-47. A three-pointer by Higgins provided another lead change, 49-52. De Colo struck from downtown and found Hunter for a slam that boosted CSKA's lead to 55-62. Higgins stayed on fire to keep the visitors in charge, 61-67, after 30 minutes. Mikhail Kulagin nailed a triple early in the fourth quarter, but Carroll kept Madrid close at 66-72. Kulagin made free throws and Higgins struck from downtown for a double-digit CSKA lead, 66-77, with eight minutes left. Fernandez and Reyes tried to change things for Madrid, but Higgins and Kyle Hines kept CSKA ahead, 73-84. Nothing changed after that, as CSKA cruised to a well-deserved win.

Pivotal performer

Clyburn did a little bit of everything to lead CSKA to a big road victory - 18 points, 6 rebounds, 1 assist, 2 steals and 6 fouls drawn for a PIR of 27. He was solid all game long, finding answers at both ends.

Game-changing moment

Madrid led 49-45 early in the first half, but Higgins, Clyburn and De Colo combined for all the points in a 6-19 run that put CSKA ahead for good, 55-64. In a critical moment, CSKA's perimeter stars stepped up to make the difference. Madrid never led after that.

Stellar stat

Three-point shots made the difference in this game. CSKA hit 15 of 26 shots from downtown (57.7%), limiting Madrid to just 8 of 22 three-pointers (36.4%). De Colo and Higgins each hit four shots from beyond the arc.

Did you notice?

Higgins scored 20 of his 24 points in the final 16 minutes. He was there for CSKA in crunch time and had a new season-high in scoring. Higgins had already scored 23 points against AX Armani Exchange Olimpia Milano and Zalgiris Kaunas.

Next game

Both teams return to EuroLeague action on Friday, December 7 - Madrid visits Anadolu Efes Istanbul and CSKA returns to Spain to face KIROLBET Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz.

"First of all, congratulations to CSKA for its victory. When you see the stats, there is a key aspect and that is their three-point shooting percentage. Some of them came after good defenses, in the final second and it was probably a handicap for us. At halftime, they even had hit more three-pointers than two-pointers. It would be too little to think that just because they hit their shots, they won the game. I believe that we were not good as a team on defense or offense. That doesn't mean that the team didn't put out a good effort, because I believe it did. We had to overcome our bad start and the team had to work a lot to turn that situation around. I had the feeling that we were not playing as a team, and I am responsible for that, really. I am not happy with my team's work; we didn't play a good game and obviously, we have to improve. There are some situations we talked about and didn't control and that was part of the difference. I had the feeling that CSKA was the better team tonight. They hit shots, some of them very difficult, that changed the game. De Colo hit two at the end of the shot clock, but Facu [Campazzo] also hit one at the end of the first quarter. The feeling I have is that we didn't play a good game as a team, on offense or defense, and that's it. Now we have some days without games which will be good for us to recover and work on things that we lost along the way with so many games."
ITOUDIS, DIMITRIS
CSKA Moscow
"I would like to say, obviously, congratulations to my team. Tonight we had two teams wanting to bounce back, but, obviously, I have to talk about my team. We wanted to bounce back after a bad performance defensively, especially in the second half, from the middle of the third quarter and the whole fourth quarter against Buducnost. We have worked a lot, we have analyzed ourselves, we have been criticized. And it couldn't happen better for us, to have such a great opponent in front of us to play against and see where we are at. I think we played a very smart game although we had our bad moments. One of them was in the second quarter, when we were scoreless for seven minutes. But I think that in the third quarter, when we realized how we had to play the game, especially on the level of hustle, we controlled the second half. I repeat again, against a great opponent, the defending champions, playing at home. They have full respect from our side, but big congratulations to my players because after that second quarter and that seven-minute blackout on offense, we didn't get the help we needed from the players coming off the bench. That drastically changed in the third quarter. We had help from each and every one of them. I want to congratulate them because we did the small things, we accumulated a lot of small things down the stretch and won the game. We want to keep our composure; we have a lot of games ahead of us. It is a good win, but this is just the beginning in this EuroLeague marathon."

FERNANDEZ, RUDY
Real Madrid
"It is a long competition and we know how difficult these games are. Olympiacos, Barcelona and CSKA beat Madrid in the last week - and we have to learn from these three losses. Speaking about tonight's game, we had a very bad start, then put more pressure on defense and that allowed us to get the lead at halftime and after that, it was very similar to the first quarter. They hit a lot of shots and at the same time, played well in one-on-one situations. We were always trailing and CSKA is the fair winner. Things like this happen; small details made the difference and against a team like CSKA, a bad start makes you trail 3-17. In that sense, we knew we had to work hard on defense and that is what we did in the second quarter, allowing just 14 points. Trading baskets against a team like CSKA usually brings a loss. They have a lot of great scorers and proved it in the fourth quarter. We tried to play good defense, but they hit a lot of contested shots. We fought until the end, but truth to be told, small details allowed CSKA to get the win."
HIGGINS, CORY
CSKA Moscow
"It feels great. We just inspired each other and that was the whole motivation, to stay together no matter what happened. And we really came up big for one another tonight."
CLYBURN, WILL
CSKA Moscow
"It feels great to get a win, especially after last week's loss. It feels good to come out here and get a road win. We struggled last week, very bad. So getting this win on the road builds our confidence for the next games and the upcoming road games."
