Team effort pays off for Khimki

Khimki Moscow Region registered its third consecutive victory by downing Panathinaikos OPAP Athens 76-68 at home on Friday. Khimki improved to 4-6 in the standings while Panathinaikos dropped to 5-5. Anthony Gill led the winners with 21 points. Jordan Mickey added 14 while Charles Jenkins had 12 for Khimki, which was without injured superstar Alexey Shved. James Gist led Panathinaikos with 19 points. Keith Langford added 17 while Matt Lojeski had 13 for the guests.

Early three-pointers by Jenkins and Malcolm Thomas gave Khimki a 10-4 lead. Stephane Lasme hit back-to-back jumpers and Lojeski hit a triple as Panathinaikos pulled within 12-11. Gill followed a jumper with a layup before Dee Bost gave Khimki an 18-11 margin. Ian Vougioukas and Gist stepped up for the guests and a three-point play by Langford got Panathinaikos within 20-19. Sergey Monia took over with a triple, a layup-plus-free throw and a steal that allowed Stefan Markovic to strike from downtown and give Khimki a 29-25 edge after 10 minutes. Three-pointers by DeShaun Thomas and Langford put the Greens in charge, 31-33. Nikos Pappas joined the three-point shootout before Langford's free throws boosted the Panathinaikos lead to 33-40. Khimki reacted with a 10-0 run, however, with all points shared by Mickey and Gill, while a three-pointer by Vyacheslav Zaytsev kept the hosts ahead, 48-44, at halftime. Gill followed a jumper with an off-balance jump hook for a 52-47 Khimki lead after the break. Jenkins bettered Gist's dunk with triple and an unstoppable Gill kept the hosts in charge, 59-51, after 30 minutes. Langford and Thomas each hit a triple to give Panathinaikos hope at 62-57 early in the fourth quarter. Monia answered from downtown and Markovic made a layup, forcing a Panathinaikos timeout at 69-61 with more than 4 minutes left. Free throws by Mickey and Gill sealed the outcome, 74-63, as Panathinaikos never recovered.

Pivotal performer

Jenkins averaged 3.9 points before this game but showed his best Khimki needed him – with Shved sidelined. The experienced combo guard had 12 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assists, 3 steals and 1 block for a true all-around performance.

Game-changing moment

Khimki allowed just 4 points in the final 9 minutes of the third quarter, while Gill and Jenkins allowed the hosts to build a solid 59-51 lead and eventually cruise to a well-deserved win.

Stellar stat

Two-point shots made the difference in the game. Khimki hit 20 of 31 (64.5%) and Panathinaikos hit just 14 of 35 (40%) inside the arc.

Did you notice?

Before this game, Calathes led the assists table at 8.2 per game. He was limited to just 4 by Khimki's defense. Shved averaged 7.4 assists before his injury. In his absence, Dee Bost and Markovic combined for 11 against Panathinaikos. All told, Khimki had 24 assists to 14 for Panathinaikos.

Next game

Khimki visits FC Bayern Munich next Thursday in Round 11. Panathinaikos hosts Fenerbahce Istanbul on Friday in what always is a special game for legendary head coach Zeljko Obradovic, who won five of his nine EuroLeague titles with the Greens.

"Our defense in the second half was the key. In offense, of course, we are more predictable now without Alexey [Shved ], but we managed to play good defense in the second half, allowing Panathinaikos to score just 24 points. It was a team effort, a team win, a very important win against a very experienced team. The first half was like an exhibition game, 48-44, and with this kind of defense we cannot beat teams like Panathinaikos. We had to improve our defense and did it in the second half. In the third quarter, our defense was solid and finally, we managed to win the game."

"Congratulations to Khimki for this win. It was a game in which both teams played better on offense than on defense in the first 20 minutes. After that, we had opportunities in the first 20 minutes to take a little advantage, but in the end, Khimki was winning by 4 because we made two or three mistakes in the last part of the second quarter. After that, in the second half, both teams improved on defense but we made tremendous mistakes on offense. We missed four or five easy fastbreaks, open shots, and this is why we only scored 7 points in the third quarter. After that, both teams had chances to win but at some point, Khimki took a 10-point lead after two or three mistakes that we did on offense and it was impossible to come back."

"In the beginning, we were getting what we wanted on offense, but we couldn't guard anybody. It was a high-scoring game for both teams, 48-44. We had enough confidence on offense; we pretty much got everything that we executed. We had to rebound and try to control Langford the best that we could. He got it going really early but we were able to put it together in the second half. Anthony (Gill) played really good, we made the extra pass and had a lot of assists as a team. This is what you have to do to succeed. You have to move the ball and defend. I just made shots. I didn't try to be too aggressive but somebody had to step up a little bit, and that was everybody, it wasn't just me. You can't make up what Alexey does with one player. We have to find the way to even it out. I just made some shots, that's it."
MICKEY, JORDAN

"This is a game in which we wanted to come out and play great defense. We have been doing pretty well so far in the last three or four EuroLeague games that we had. We won three out of four, so we wanted to come out and do what we have been doing – and defense is a big part of that. We know it is part of the game [Shved's injury], guys get hurt and guys go down. We adjusted and, like I said, we just had to be more aggressive and continue to play defense."

"I think defense was the key for us. We had an opportunity to come into our home gym today and get a win – and we did. We had to step up because Shved is out for a while now, and I think we played great team basketball. In order for us to continue to win games, that is what we have to do. We have to play team basketball and play defense. We all knew that we had to pick it up a little bit. He (Shved) is such a big part of our team, scores the majority of our points, and leads the team every game. We had to step up and everybody had to do their job. We had to play without him."

"In the first half, we were good on offense but we were not good on defense. This then changed, we fought on defense, but on offense we didn't do what we needed in the second half. This is basketball. I think we were very selfish. We made the wrong choices, we had the game in our hands, but we did not manage to win."
