Benetton overwhelmed Bayern Munich 92-66 on Tuesday to a trip to the Last 16. The hosts improved to 3-2 and took second place in Group G. Benetton rocketed out in front early and seemed to score at will for much of the game. The lead was 12 after 10 minutes and 23 by halftime. Jeff Adrien led six Benetton scorers in double figures with 16 points. Andrea De Nicolao added 15, Alessandro Gentile scored 13, Massimo Bulleri 12, Vlad Moldoveanu 11 and Jobey Thomas netted 10 in his debut. Jarred Homan led Munich with 14 points and Jan Jagla contributed 13. The loss dropped Munich’s record to 1-4.

Homan put Munich out front 4-6 with three early buckets. The lead soon shifted Benetton’s way, as De Nicolao and Moldoveanu drained triples to set the score at 10-6. After Munich’s Steffen Hamann hit a triple of this own, Benetton’s latest addition, Thomas, greeted fans by adding another triple, thus extending the lead to 13-9. Bulleri followed an exchange of baskets with a triple, followed by a dunk by Adrien that pushed the lead to 20-11. Munich came up with 4 points in the paint, but a layup and free throws followed by Bulleri’s triple at the buzzer gave the hosts a 27-15 lead to end the first quarter. The offensive momentum stayed with Benetton as it opened the second quarter with a 14-6 run, led by Gentile, Sani Becirovic and Bulleri, to set the score at 41-21. The visitors kept pace offensively for a while, as Chevon Troutman knocked down 5 points, but they could not eat into the Benetton lead, now at 48-28. Becirovic’s foul shots ended first-half scoring with the hosts holding a hefty 51-28 lead.

The hosts resumed their barrage of points in the second half, extending the lead to 61-29 as De Nicolao and Adrien put in layups and Thomas scored 5 on a three-pointer and a jumper. Munich went on a 6-point run, but the hosts responded, pushing the score to 68-35. The teams swapped baskets for the duration of the quarter as Benetton took a 76-50 lead into the final 10 minutes. Moldoveanu’s triple and two-pointer were the only points in the opening minutes, widening the hosts lead to 81-50. Jagla finally got Munich on the board after 5 minutes with a three-pointer, then Troutman hit a two-point jumper, but the hosts never stopped scoring, inflating the lead to 90-55. Munich outscored the visitors 2-11 in the final three minutes, but still barely dented the lead as Benetton cruised 92-66.
