Shields triple lifts Milan over Bayern in OT

Shavon Shields hit a three-pointer with 9 seconds left in overtime to give AX Armani Exchange Milan a dramatic 79-81 road win over FC Bayern Munich. Neither team led by more than 5 points before Milan forced overtime on a runner by Sergio Rodriguez in the final minute of regulation, and then Shields hit a tough game-winner with a hand in his face. Malcolm Delaney paced Milan with 17 points and 8 assists, while Kyle Hines scored 16 points, both in their Milan debuts. Shields, another newcomer, finished with 9 points. Wade Baldwin IV led Bayern with 18 points, and Jalen Reynolds had 14 points plus 11 rebounds, including 9 on the offensive end. Nihad Dedovic also scored 14, and dished 7 assists, while Vladimir Lucic had 12 points in the loss.

The teams traded leads throughout the first quarter as Delaney led Milan's offense with 4 assists and Michael Roll strung together 8 consecutive points, including two three-pointers. But Bayern had answers with Dedovic's three-point play and Leon Radosevic scoring a pair of baskets to tie it at 12-12. Bayern had success on the offensive boards, and a long-range shot from Paul Zipser gave the hosts a 17-15 lead at the start of the second quarter. The rhythm picked when Delaney returned to the floor, as he traded triples with Dedovic to cap a 3-10 run and restore Milan's lead. Another three from Delaney made it 25-30 later in the second, but Bayern kept attacking the glass and a jumper from Wade Baldwin IV cut it to 31-32 at halftime. Zach LeDay scored twice from close range and Delaney hit from long range, but Baldwin, Dedovic and Lucic knocked down triples as the lead kept changing hands. Bayern kept hustling and went ahead 48-44 behind close-range baskets from Reynolds, before Datome's buzzer-beating triple made it 55-54 after 30 minutes. Rodriguez and Hines converted the first two possession of the fourth quarter to put Milan up, but Dedovic ended a 0-7 run with a runner before jumpers from Radosevic and Baldwin secured another lead change, 63-60. Hines answered with 5 straight points to put Milan back in front with 4:30 left. But the hosts responded with close-range baskets from Reynolds and Baldwin, and after Shields and Lucic traded threes, a driving layup from Rodriguez with 55 seconds to go made it 70-70, which ended up the score at the end of regulation. Delaney scored 6 points early in the extra period, but Baldwin brought Bayern back to 77-78. Nick Weiler-Babb made it 79-78 from the free throw line, but Shields struck to send Milan ahead and Baldwin couldn’t make an attempted game-winning triple on the buzzer.

Nearly new starting five

Milan's starting lineup featured four players who joined the club this summer: Malcolm Delaney, Shavon Shields, Zach LeDay and Kyle Hines. The only returnee among the starters was Michael Roll, who got Milan's offense going with 8 early points.

Close game magic

This game featured 26 lead changes and 12 ties, and the score was as tight as it gets at the end of each quarter. Milan led 14-15 after the first quarter, and held a 31-32 lead at halftime. Bayern was up 55-54 after three quarters, and teams were tied at 70-70 at the end of regulation.

Did you know?

This was seventh head-to-head game between Bayern and Milan, and the fourth meeting decided by 2 points or fewer.

Offensive boards domination

Bayern big man Jalen Reynolds was a monster on the offensive glass. He had 11 rebounds, a career high, and his 9 offensive boards are not just his personal best but also shattered Bayern’s club record. Bayern finished the game with a 14-7 advantage in offensive rebounds.

Next up

Both teams will be in action on Friday in Round 2 next week, with Bayern traveling to visit ALBA Berlin in an all-German clash, while Milan will welcome LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne.

“Congratulations to Milan, they won with three huge plays: two from Delaney, and one from Shields. A win is a win, a loss is a loss. Tonight the scoreboard said we lost, but we should not feel defeated. Not at all. We fought, we played hard, we made millions of mistakes but we went through our mistakes. At a certain point we had the game, and a big play didn't give us a chance to go home with what we wanted and I believe we deserved. We have two completely different emotions: I am proud how my team fought until the very end, on every ball, but on the other side I am extremely upset because we did not finish the job. Tomorrow we rest, and Sunday we come back to start preparing for a game on Friday when all our frustration should turn into positive energy.”
MESSINA, ETTORE
AX Armani Exchange Milan

“Assuming this will be an easy game is completely wrong. I am extremely happy, we won against a good team on the road. We faced some unusual mistakes because we turned the ball over little bit too much, but the main point is we are not supposed to win every game. It is not easy. I don't know if you buy confidence in the store. We have confidence, we play together and we are very humble. And we don't expect to win by 20 over anybody because we are trying to make ourselves a name in this competition.”

“We knew coming in that it was going to be difficult against a very physical team, very well organized defensively by Andrea Trinchieri. We missed Kevin Punter and Vladimir Mivoc, two starters, so we knew it would be a very tough night. The only thing that surprised us was that we turned the ball over too much. 18 turnovers is not what we usually do, we usually take care of the ball and get in a flow offensively. So, at the end it became two good defenses, switching a lot. And it could have gone both ways. We made couple of big shots and we won, they missed and they lost. It could have gone either way. We had some lapses defensively. We rotated but we didn’t contest two three-pointers. We fouled a shot because we jumped instead of staying with our feet on the floor. Or instead of boxing out, we gave up offensive rebounds to Reynolds. Small things like this we cannot afford. We are so far undefeated, but sooner or later we will lose games. And what has happened in Round 1 of the EuroLEague is a big proof of what I am saying. A lot of theoretically unexpected results, but results are never unexpected because people fight, play hard, and have talent. Some teams have more talent, some team maybe have less, but every team is physical and everyone is very well organized defensively. We are very happy that we won.”

DELANEY, MALCOLM
AX Armani Exchange Milan
“It was good. We kind of struggled throughout the game, but we stuck with it, found a way to win. It's a good win on the road to start the EuroLeague season. I think they just had good defensive strategy. They switched a lot, we overreacted instead of playing the way we play. But we overcame it. Every team in the EuroLeague playing at home is tough. Bayern is well coached, they have a good roster and they came out and played well.”
HINES, KYLE
AX Armani Exchange Milan
“This is EuroLeague. There are no babies in EuroLeague. Every team we play it will be physical competition. Especially because guys have been waiting for this a long time, they've been waiting months and months to be able to come back. We expected it to be a physical game, especially here against this type of team. We got to continue to play this way. We are not a finished product, we know that this season is a long ride, it's a marathon. Our main mindset is just to continue to get better every day. That's our main goal. As long as we continue to do that we'll be fine at the end.”
