Darussafaka holds on in Ljubljana

Darussafaka Tekfen Istanbul got its return to the 7DAYS EuroCup off to a great start with a road win, holding off Cedevita Olimpija Ljubljana 73-79 on Wednesday night at Arena Stozice. Darussafaka led for the majority of the second half, but after falling behind late finished the game with a 2-9 run in the final 3 and a half minutes to pull out the victory. Bonzie Colson paced the winners with 16 points and 8 rebounds. Gary Browne scored 10 of his 14 points in the third quarter, while Doron Lamb netted 13 points for Darussafaka. Codi Miller-McIntyre collected 18 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists for the hosts, Marko Simonovic scored 14 points, while Edo Muric, Jaka Blazic and Andrija Stipanovic netted 10 apiece in a losing effort.

Cedevita was the first team to pull away. Back-to-back Simonovic triples sparked a 12-0 Cedevita run to finish the first quarter with a 24-12 lead. Stipanovic extended it to 28-14 early in the second, but Darussafaka answered with triples from Lamb, Sinan Guler and Jarrod Jones in a 0-13 run. More threes, one from Lamb and one from Kartal Ozmizrak, helped the visitors take a 35-39 edge into halftime. One triple from Lamb and a pair from Browne helped push the lead to 43-54 midway through the third. Miller-McIntyre fueled the hosts and Blazic hit a half-court shot at the end of the third quarter as Olimpija slowly rallied. Miller-McIntyre scored 6 more points driving to the basket and Muric nailed a corner three-pointer to give the hosts a 71-70 lead. But Johnathan Hamilton had a put-back dunk and Lamb added a triple to make it 71-75 before Browne put the finishing touch with a spinning driving layup to make it 73-77 with 26 seconds left, as Darussafaka held on.

Game-changing run

Olimpija led 28-14 in the second quarter and seemed to be in control when Darussafaka answered with 13 consecutive points, including a triple apiece from Doron Lamb, Sinan Guler and Jarrod Jones. After the hosts' timeout, Lamb hit another one and Kartal Ozmizrak banked one to cap a 5-25 run that turned the game around.

Rebounding domination

Darussafaka outrebounded the hosts 48-31 and had 17 offensive rebounds, many of them long bounces off the rim after missed three-point shots. Olimpija had 7 rebounds on the offensive glass.

The free throw story

There were a total of 23 free throws in the game, but on this rare instance, none until 3:52 left in the second quarter when Marko Simonovic stepped to the line to sink a pair for Cedevita. Those were the only free throws of the first half, and Darussafaka didn't take any until 6 minutes and 43 seconds to go in the third quarter.

Next up

Next week in Round 2, Darussafaka will host Nanterre 92 in its home opener on Tuesday. Cedevita will travel to face UNICS Kazan on Wednesday.

RIMAC, SLAVEN
Cedevita Olimpija Ljubljana
"We started the game well and let Darussafaka score only 12 points. In the second quarter, the team started playing better, but for me, this is not a huge problem. The problem is that when they started playing and turning the score in their favor, we didn't make personal fouls. We did a good job on defense, but 17 offensive rebounds by our competitors are simply too much. This is what made the difference in the end. The players wanted to prove themselves in front of the fans, but this took them in the wrong direction. We tried to solve our problems with one-on-one and not with team play, which was bad for us. Darussafaka deserved to win."
ERNAK, SELCUK

"In the first half, we could not execute any defensive plan, but we picked it up in the second half. Most important for us, we are a new and inexperienced team, but the total basketball IQ my players showed on the court tonight is very respectable. If we can put the breaks over this one, good things could be in front of us this season. It is very hard to win on the road and Olimpija has a great tradition of Slovenian basketball. They know what kind of team they are putting on the floor and this is a good win on the road."

Players

MILLER-MCINTYRE, CODI

"We opened the game with a lot of energy. Something happened during the second quarter since we have simply stopped playing and the result dramatically changed. When a team returns to the game, it usually catches a good rhythm and it is difficult to catch this kind of a team afterward. We have plenty of work to do and if I can point out one thing that was causing us problems, it was their offensive rebounds. They collected 17 of them, which are 17 additional offensive plays. It is difficult to beat a team with so many offensive plays."
BROWNE, GARY
Darussafaka Tekfen Istanbul
"It was a good game. They have great players, a great coach and a great team. We came out with a mentality knowing we are the underdogs. It was our first game of the season and very valuable in terms of the qualification. When we were down 12 points in the first quarter and our second unit came out and did a pretty good job on the road and that shows us a lot how good of a team we can be."
