Maccabi holds on against Valencia in Tel Aviv

Maccabi FOX Tel Aviv held off a late Valencia Basket scare to record a 94-91 victory on Thursday night at Menora Mivtachim Arena. Down 9 with 85 seconds remaining, Valencia rallied and had a shot to tie it in the closing seconds, but Erick Green missed from downtown and the Spanish champs dropped their seventh game in a row. Maccabi improved to 7-4 with the victory and Valencia slipped to 3-8. Pierre Jackson paced the victors with 21 points, DeShaun Thomas fired in 20 off the bench, Art Parakhouski produced 14 points on perfect shooting and Norris Cole added 12. Green finished with 24 points and 7 assists, Fernando San Emeterio scored all of his 15 points in the second half and Guillem Vives added 11 points in defeat.

While both teams scored on each of their first five possessions, four of those Valencia buckets were threes – two from Vives and one each from Will Thomas and Green – which put the visitors ahead 10-14. Parakhouski came up with the next 4 points to tie it and John DiBartolomeo hit Maccabi’s first three for a 20-18 edge. After two more lead changes, DeShaun Thomas beat the buzzer with a layup that made it 25-21 after 10 minutes. Rafa Martinez hit another Valencia three and Tibor Pleiss scored via a jumper and a layup as the visitors closed to within 29-28. Damjan Rudez buried a three that tied the score at 33-33. Jackson fed Parakhouski and then netted a triple to put Maccabi up 40-35, but after a Valencia timeout, Green responded with a four-point play. After a technical foul on Coach Spahija, Green tied it at 44-44 from the resulting free throw and he added 2 more in the closing seconds of the quarter, but Maccabi ran a play for Parakhouski, who beat the halftime buzzer with a jumper to tie the score at 46-46.

Jackson hit a three and then drew a foul shooting a three and netted the resulting free throws before Michael Roll added a floater to cap an 8-0 run. Jonah Bolden’s triple extended the margin to 9, but San Emeterio answered for Valencia from downtown. Maccabi seemed to be coasting until Tryggvi Hlinason’s put-back and a San Emeterio triple helped Valencia trim the deficit. Vives banked in a three to make it 64-63. However DeShaun Thomas’s three-point play and a Cole jumper kept the hosts ahead 69-65 through three quarters. DeShaun Thomas started the fourth with a baby hook and Cole sank a floater, which prompted a Valencia timeout. San Emeterio responded with a three-point play and Green closed the gap to 73-70. Valencia remained close behind, 79-77, thanks to a three by Aaron Doornekamp, who became the seventh Valencia man to connect from downtown. But DeShaun Thomas banked in a three and Roll sank free throws that put the hosts up 8 with three minutes remaining. The game seemed over, but Valencia never threw in the towel and a Sam Van Rossom triple made it a one-possession game, 94-91, with 13.9 seconds remaining. Then Maccabi committed a 5-second violation, but Green missed with a chance to tie it in the closing seconds.

Like always in this situation, I would like to congratulate my team for a great effort and one more win the in EuroLeague. Once more we saw that there is no easy life in this league. So many opponents, so much preparation. But in the end we found a way to win the game. It’s not my favorite, giving up 91 points, 14 threes by making small mistakes, but also credit to Valencia, which played unbelievably good. They really know what they want to do, [only made] 5 turnovers, find the best solutions. They know how to play in the bonus. Champions of Spain with most of the players on the roster. I would say they know better hos to execute in such situations, especially five on five. When we are defending, when we are grabbing rebounds, when we are playing in the open court, it's very difficult to stop us. And in the end, 66% shooting on two-pointers and outrebounding we won the game.

"Congratulations to Maccabi for this win. For me it was an amazing day being here. Remember in the beginning of my presence in basketball in the seventies, I saw players like Moti Aroesti, Lou Silver, Jim Boatwright, Earl Williams, Aulcie Perry, Miki Berkowitz of course. So many good players. For me it’s an unbelievable day to be here. And I need to congratulate my players also for this game, because we fought from the first minute till the 40th trying to win. We made a big effort to end this losing streak. We are close to ending the streak, because we are doing the things we need to improve, like defensive rebounds. In the first half, they had the same number of offensive rebounds as we took defensive rebounds. But we improved that in the second half and probably we need to be a little fresh to defend one-on-one against important players like Cole or Pierre Jackson. But for us this is very difficult with five injured players – three of them usually starters for us. It was a good day, but not a completely satisfying day because we lost the game."

"It was a great game. We started a little bit slowly; they got a couple of offensive rebounds and made 3 threes out of this. The game was tough for us. They shot very well from three-point range. But we stuck together and showed great character and team basketball. "
ROLL, MICHAEL
Maccabi FOX Tel Aviv
"We protected our home court. We knew they were going to come in fighting and they did just that. We stayed collected as a group down the stretch and we were able to come away with a W. We made some costly turnovers, but we were able to stay positive and get a stop on that last play. "
JACKSON, PIERRE
Maccabi FOX Tel Aviv
"Hopefully just winning will be our specialty. I’m glad we were able to pull this one out. The crowd was important tonight. We got a little excited at the end and they made some big shots, but we were able to keep our composure at the end. "
RUDEZ, DAMJAN
Valencia Basket
"I think that, overall, we played a great game on a very difficult court against a very, very good team. Congratulations to Maccabi for winning this close game. Unfortunately, in the first half, we had some difficulties defending their transition. They were over-running us and we lost a couple of points on that. Overall, I think we put up a good fight. We are still growing as a team and I think we have to be very positive about what is ahead of us. It is difficult to play here, in Tel Aviv, congratulations to them again, we will focus on winning our next game."
