Zenit St. Petersburg crushed Besiktas to start season 5-0

Zenit St. Petersburg outscored Besiktas Sompo Japan Istanbul 48-17 in the middle two quarters before cruising to an 82-58 victory at Sibur Arena to give the team a perfect record in Group E through five Eurocup games. Janis Timma collected 20 points and 7 assists and Andrey Koshcheev posted 19 points and 8 rebounds to lead Zenit. Whose 30 assists were twice as many as the visitors had. Artem Vikhrov added 10 points and Zab Dowdell dished 10 assists for the winners. Maciej Lampe totaled 12 points in the first six minutes to help Besiktas lead by 1 after one quarter, but he had all of the team’s 6 points in the second quarter as Zenit took control. Lampe finished with 24 points and 11 rebounds and Nate Wolters recorded 10 points and 7 assists in defeat.

Lampe went to work early with the first two baskets of the game, but Koshcheev scored twice to tie it at 6-6. Lampe put the visitors back on top and remained a force with an offensive rebound, basket and foul to make it 9-13. His triple stretched the lead to 5, but Vikhrov started a 7-0 run that gave Zenit an 18-16 edge. After the teams traded shots, Cenk Akyol buried a three to give Besiktas a 22-23 lead after 10 minutes. Timma buried back-to-back threes to start the second quarter as Zenit soared in front 30-23. Lampe scored twice to keep Besiktas in the picture, but the Zenit defense silenced the rest of the visiting attack. Over the final six minutes of the half, Besiktas could only muster a single basket from Lampe, while five different Zenit players scored in a 12-2 run to take a commanding 44-29 halftime lead.

Besiktas could not find an answer to its offensive woes as Zenit went on an 11-2 run to start the second half during which Timma scored 5 points. Even after Lampe scored, Zenit continued to party as an unsportsmanlike foul by Engin Atsur on Pavel Antipov saw the lead skyrocket to 28. Lampe hit free throws and Atsur connected on a three-pointer, but Koshcheev scored the next 4 points and a three by Timma made it 70-40 through three quarters. The lead peaked at 74-40 on a Timma jumper early in the fourth quarter as the outcome was clear. Besiktas managed to trim the deficit through Wolters, but the Zenit fans were already celebrating a 5-0 start to the season.

Head Coaches

KARASEV, VASILY
Zenit St Petersburg
"I can say that today we didn’t have high shooting percentages, but we had team play. Thirty assists in a game says a lot. We made only 23% of our three-point shots. This shows that we win not because of luck, but because of our hard work. We conceded only 6 points in the second quarter and 11 in the third. I think that it was a good work by all the coaching staff and it’s great that players understand it and love this style of basketball."
ULUG, YAGIZER HAMDI
Besiktas Sompo Japan Istanbul
"Today Zenit was strong both physically and mentally on the court. They played a very tough game. From the second half they increased their toughness and game tempo. We couldn’t respond to this and they got what they deserved."

Players

TIMMA, JANIS
Zenit St Petersburg
"I want to congratulate our team for a good game, especially in defense. We knew that it wouldn’t be a weak opponent and we needed to play good defense. From this defense we had positive emotions, which we could use in offense. Defense was the main point for today’s game. We knew they have experienced players and if they feel the tempo of the game, it would be very tough for us. We executed our plan and the game went as we wanted."
LAMPE, MACIEJ
Besiktas Sompo Japan Istanbul
"Today was a very bad game for us. We were unprepared. Zenit plays very team-organized basketball. But this game didn’t show who we are and we can play a lot better than this. This is not our real team. It feels like a bad dream, but it happened and we should learn from this and move on. We had an opportunity to win here tonight and to be first in our group, but we didn’t do it. So we have to go back and improve."
