Keith Simmons - Banvit BK - EC12 (photo s.oliver Baskets)Banvit BK Bandirma advanced to the Last 16 with a strong 62-81 road victory over S.Oliver Baskets Wurzburg in Group D. With the winner of the game guaranteed second place in the group and the loser eliminated, Chuck Davis scored 22 points and Sammy Mejia collected 17 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 steals to lead Banvit to a 4-2 record. Kalin Lucas added 15 points, Keith Simmons had 10 points, Vladimir Stimac grabbed 10 rebounds and Kenan Bajramovic collected 9 points and 9 rebounds for Banvit, which now joins BC Triumph, Budivelnik Kiev and KK Buducnost in Last 16 Group I. Wurzburg dropped to 3-3 despite 12 points from Dwayne Anderson and 11 points from Oliver Clay.

Davis scored six points as Banvit jumped out to a 0-15 lead on the road. Clay stopped the scoring drought after five minutes for Wurzburg’s first basket. Pigram Courtney and Lamont McIntosh both nailed three-balls as the hosts got to within 12-17. But Banvit responded with a 0-8 run and led 16-27 after one quarter. Wurzburg narrowed the deficit to 20-29 before Banvit again pulled away thanks to five points from Davis in pushing the lead to 24-40. And the guests went into the break ahead 26-45.

Ben Jacobson opened the second half with a triple but Davis answered with a long ball of his own and Mejia helped keep the host side at bay. Led by Clay, Wurzburg was able to cut the deficit to within 40-54. But Lucas and Bajramovic both nailed big three-pointers as Banvit remained ahead 44-62. The lead was 47-62 after three quarters. The hosts put on one final push with Clay trimming the margin to 55-66 with six minutes left. But Lucas made two free throws and Simmons hit a three-ball in a 0-7 run over the next two minutes for a 55-73 lead with less than four minutes to play. And Wurzburg did not get closer than 15 points the rest of the way.

Head Coaches

SCHRODER, MARCEL
s.Oliver Baskets Wurzburg
"Bandirma showed from the beginning of the game that they wanted to win and make it to the next round. We started too slow, couldn't make our shots early and didn't have enough focus on defense. That's why we had a big deficit after five minutes. Bandirma also dominated the offensive boards in the first half and attacked the basket well. We had a good run in the third quarter, but they hit their shots and had an answer every time we tried to get closer."
ENE, ORHUN
Banvit Bandirma
"First of all, I want to congratulate s.Oliver Baskets. They did a great job in the Eurocup. We didn't expect them to win against Valencia and on the road at Azovmash. After I watched their games, I respected our opponents. We have the more experienced players on this level and the Eurocup is one of our priorities this season. We used our experience and played smart on offense. On defense we did a good job, too, we stopped McKinney and Anderson. We also defended their three-points shots well. We had a couple of difficult situations, but our effort and our concentration helped us to win the game. We know that this game does not show the real basketball of the s.Oliver team. We put a lot of pressure on them. We are happy that we got this good win and will go on to the next round of the competition."

Players

STUCKEY, MAURICE
s.Oliver Baskets Wurzburg
"We fell behind by 15 points early and couldn't recover from that deficit. It's tough to come back against any team like Bandirma. Also, we allowed them too many offensive rebounds and had turnovers when we tried to get closer. We're disappointed today, but nobody expected us to win three games in this tough group."
LUCAS, KALIN
Banvit Bandirma
"It was an important game for both clubs. Offensively, we did a great job. The first five minutes of the game were the key for the win. We wanted to go out aggressive and be strong, because if you lose, you go home, and we definitely didn't want to go home."
