Peiners lifts Darussafaka to first win

Darussafaka Tekfen Istanbul recorded its first win in the 2018-19 Turkish Airlines EuroLeague Regular Season by edging Buducnost VOLI Podgorica 71-63 in Volkswagen Arena on Tuesday. Darussafaka improved to 1-1 in the standings while Buducnost dropped to 0-2. Zanis Peiners led the winners with 15 points. Stanton Kidd got 12, Michael Eric added 10 while Jeremy Evans pulled down 12 rebounds for Darussafaka. Earl Clark and Nemanja Gordic led Buducnost with 11 points apiece. Nikola Ivanovic added 10 for the guests. The game saw eight lead changes in the opening five minutes until Kidd dunked for a 12-9 Darussafaka lead. Edwin Jackson came off the bench and struck twice from downtown in a 0-14 run in which Coty Clarke and Ivanovic also buried a triple each for a 14-25 Buducnost margin after 10 minutes. Darussafaka improved its defense early in the second quarter, allowing Jon Diebler and an outstanding Dogus Ozdemiroglu to fuel a mammoth 19-0 run which Kidd capped with a three-pointer, good for a 33-25 Darussafaka lead. Gordic stepped up for the guests but a layup by Peiners fixed the halftime score at 39-35. A three-pointer by Muhammed Baygul boosted the hosts' margin to 48-39 late in the third quarter but Clarke and Jackson kept Buducnost within 53-49 after 30 minutes. Ivanovic had five points in a 0-7 run which completed Buducnost's comeback, 55-58. A layup-plus-foul by Peiners made the hosts regain a 62-60 edge with four minutes left. Omic tied the game with a dunk but Evans and Peiners made the difference in crunch time.

Pivotal performer

Not only did he lead his team in scoring, but Peiners stepped up in crunch time, too. With his team down 59-60, Peiners took over with the go-ahead three-point play, adding another critical basket and a free throw to seal a remarkable performance.

Game-changing moment

Buducnost had four three-pointers in the final three minutes of the first quarter for a 14-25 lead. But the visiting team then went scoreless for the next six minutes, as Dogus Ozdemiroglu led a 19-0 run that put Darussafaka ahead for the best part of the game.

Stellar stat

Jeremy Evans pulled down 11 defensive rebounds - the most by any EuroLeague player so far this season.

Did you notice?

After pulling down 20 offensive rebounds against AX Armani Exchange Olimpia Milan in Round 1, Buducnost had just 8 against Darussafaka. The guests were outrebounded by 32-26.

Next game:

Both teams play against on Thursday. Buducnost welcomes Maccabi FOX Tel Aviv at 20:00 CET. An hour earlier, at 19:00 CET, Darussafaka visits CSKA Moscow.

"I feel good but also, we played really stressed. We couldn't play our real game, especially on offense. Defense was good and our Turkish players like Dogus [Ozdemiroglu[, Kartal [Ozmizrak] and Muhammed [Baygul] came ready off the bench. They changed the game for us and we won. I am happy but it shows us we have a long way to improve. Actually, I believe we don't have enough EuroLeague experience. We are a new team at the beginning of the season, this is why we didn't play the way we liked, especially on offense. We have talented guys and if we find the way to play together, I believe we have that potential. We will always be less experienced, but we have to fight and put extra energy to cover for that."

"I congratulate Dacka, I think we played well in some parts of the game. We knew what we had to do. We're good when we move the ball and we didn't do it, it's that simple. Our disappointment on offense was reflected in our defense. We allowed too many points in the paint. We were in the game in the last quarter, but we were not able to continue. This game is over, we will learn our lessons and look ahead."

"I feel really good because in the first game, we didn't get this feeling. It was a home game today and our crowd helped us, so the feeling is really, really good. It was a very important win for us. We finally won and this is all that matters. If I did enough to win the game, then I did great. Coach gives me a lot of credit and thanks to that, I just need to use it. Thanks to him – I didn't expect that when I came here but now, I am ready and I can take this role."
