Ian Vougioukas - Unics Kazan - EC13 (photo Kalev Cramo)Unics Kazan stayed undefeated in Group G and moved up to 4-0 by downing VEF Riga 68-86 in the Latvian capital on Wednesday. Ian Vougioukas paced the winners with 23 points on 9-of-13 two-point shots and 7 rebounds. Luke Harangody added 17 points, Andrew Goudelock had 12 while Tywain McKee got 11 for Unics. Kenan Bajramovic had 17 points for VEF, which dropped to 2-2. Derrick Nix added 13 while Kristaps Janicenoks had 11 for the hosts, who led 19-18 after 10 minutes. Vougioukas and Goudelock shined late in the first half to make Unics get a 37-42 edge at the break. Unics boosted its lead to 39-54 soon after halftime and boosted its margin to 55-78 with under 6 minutes left, enough to seal the outcome and get closer to the next round.

Nix got VEF going with a put-back layup and Barjamovic soon gave the hosts a 7-5 lead. Harandogy, Nikita Kurbanov and Kaimakoglou led a 1-6 run that gave Unics its first lead, 8-11. Barjamovic and Nix kept pacing VEF but Vougioukas and Chuck Eidson boosted the guests' lead to 12-18. Janicenoks and Janis Berzins, however, led a 7-0 run that put VEF back ahead, 19-18, after 10 minutes. Three-pointers by Kaimakoglou and McKee allowed Unics to regain the lead, 21-26. Nix and Janicenoks tired to change things for VEF but a good team effort extended Unics's margin to 27-34. Nix and Dee Brown shined late in the first half but Vougioukas and Goudelock allowed Unics to keep a 37-42 edge at the break. Harangody and Goudelock shined after the break to force VEF to stop the game at 37-47. Harangody kept pacing Unics and a layup by Vougioukas broke the game open, 39-54. Tomas Delininkaitis tried to change things with a couple of three-pointers and Arturs Strelnieks brought VEF a bit closer, 48-57. McKee and Nikos Zisis, however, restored a 51-66 Unics lead after 30 minutes. Nothing changed since that moment, as McKee and Vougioukas stayed unstoppable and a jumper by Harangody sealed the outcome, 55-78, midway through the fourth quarter. VEF kept trying but Unics had cruised to a well-deserved win.

Head Coaches

BUTAUTAS, RAMUNAS
VEF Riga
"In the first quarter we played okay, but then we lost our game. It seems that our meetings and discussions with the players are without results. There's just no excuse for this kind of loss. We have to regroup and move forward. "
TRINCHIERI, ANDREA
UNICS Kazan
"We want to keep rolling and try to upgrade our game gradually. We respect VEF Riga, I also respect Coach Butautas, so we knew that this was not going to be an easy game. We showed good concentration and played well in the last three quarters of the game. In the first quarter we played too soft, but after it we managed to play better, our offense got more stable and we moved the ball better. We had a difficult schedule at the beginning of this Eurocup season and now we can go back to Kazan with a good win."

Players

JANICENOKS, KRISTAPS
VEF Riga
"I don't have much to say after such a game. We are disappointed about this loss. "
HARANGODY, LUKE
UNICS Kazan
"We came out and moved the ball very well. The second half was big, where we made a final push to win this game. "
