Strasbourg stops Bonn with great defense

Strasbourg stayed atop the standings in Group A by thrashing Telekom Baskets Bonn 76-48 at home on Wednesday. Strasbourg leads Group A with a 5-1 record while Telekom Bonn ties with Paris Levallois for third place, each at 3-3. Jeremy Leloup led the winners with 13 points. Louis Campbell added 11 while Matt Howard and Antoine Diot each had 10 for Strasbourg. Tadas Klimavicius led Bonn with 13 points and 8 rebounds. He had 8 points in an 0-11 run that gave Bonn a 14-16 edge after 10 minutes. A layup by Angelo Caloiaro gave the guests their last lead, 27-29, late in the first half. Campbell and Howard led a 9-0 run that boosted the hosts' lead to 43-33. Strasbourg kept a 52-42 margin after 30 minutes and extended it to last 60-42 to seal the outcome and cruise to a well-deserved, important home win.

Ali Traore and Leloup combined for all points in an 8-0 opening run. Dirk Madrich hit a jumper but Howard and Traore soon gave Strasbourg its first double-digit lead, 12-2. Mickey McConnell hit a three-pointer and consecutive baskets by Klimavicius brought Bonn as close as 14-10. An unstoppable Klimavicius capped a 0-11 run which gave Bonn a 14-16 edge after 10 minutes. Consecutive baskets by Axel Toupane put Strasbourg back ahead, 18-16, early in the second quarter. Steve Wachalski nailed a three-pointer but Diot and Toupane fueled an 8-1 run gave the hosts a six-point edge, 26-20. Eugene Lawrence took over with 7 unanswered points and a layup by Caloiaro gave Bonn a 27-29 edge. Free throws by Louis Campbell and Howard put the hosts ahead, 31-29, at halftime. Leloup struck from downtown but Caloiaro kept Bonn within 34-33 right after the break. It didn't last long, however, as Campbell and Howard fueled a 9-0 run which allowed Strasbourg to restore a double-digit lead, 43-33. Klimavicius stepped up with a jumper and a three-pointer to give Bonn hope at 46-40. Anthony Dobbins and a layup by Diot made the hosts regain a 52-42 margin after 30 minutes. Three-pointers by Campbell and Leloup broke the game open, 60-42, early in the fourth quarter. Benas Veikalas tried to change things for Bonn but Campbell and a wild four-point play by Antony Labanca made Strasbourg seal the outcome, 71-45, long before the final buzzer.

"During the first half we were not constant. Our bench players did not start the game well. We left them too many offensive rebounds during the first half. It was necessary to rectify thatin the second half, and we did well. Each player brought something. Our defense in the second half was outstanding. Players properly blocked Lawrence. We score just 19 in the second half and it’s simply not enough to stay close in the game. We made a lot of turnovers during the second half. It was not our best game tonight."

We focused on our defense. We limited their leader and did a good job tonight. We defended very hard on their three-point shooters. This game is very encouraging for the future. Tonight we got closer to qualifying, but we want to win the maximum amount of game to have a chance, maybe, to finish first in the group."
