Bayern edges Unicaja to go top of the group

In a clash of two previously qualified teams, FC Bayern Munich rallied late behind Nick Johnson to edge Unicaja Malaga 72-69 at Audi Dome on Wednesday. Bayern moved in sole possession of first place in Group C with a 5-2 record, while Unicaja dropped to 3-3 and fourth place. Bayern’s 12-2 run opened a 53-43 lead late in the third quarter, but Unicaja answered with a 1-17 charge that bridged the third and fourth quarters, putting Unicaja in control 54-60. But Johnson scored 8 points in the final two and a half minutes as Bayern closed out the game with a 10-2 run to pull out the victory. Johnson finished with 20 points in 17 minutes on the floor off the bench. Bryce Taylor had 10 points, and Danilo Barthel contributed with 8 points and 8 rebounds in victory. Jamar Smith netted 13 and Kyle Fogg 12 points for the visitors.

Points were few and far between at the start of the game with Jeff Brooks making a pair of baskets for the visitors and Alex King hitting a triple for the hosts that made it 5-5 after six minutes. Devin Booker helped Bayern hold at 13-12 at the end of first, but Smith hit from downtown and Dejan Musli had a couple of baskets from close range that gave Unicaja a 20-23 edge in the second quarter. Fogg scored all the points in a 0-8 run, including a steal and a fastbreak layup, that gave the visitors a 24-33 cushion, but Johnson hit a pair of triples, including one that just beat the halftime buzzer, to cut the deficit to 35-37 at the break. Barthel got the hosts going early in the third and a 9-0 run, capped by baskets from Johnson and Reggie Redding, opened a 50-41 advantage. Maxi Kleber’s three-point play pushed the margin to double-digits for the first time, but Unicaja answered by scoring the final 9 points of the third quarter with a reverse layup on a breakaway by Smith making it 53-52 going into the fourth quarter, before a dunk in the lane by Hamady Ndiaye and a fastbreak slam by Fogg gave the visitors a 53-56 lead. Two more slams and a block by Ndiaye opened a 56-62 edge. The teams went to the free throw line often, before a step-back three-pointer from Johnson and a tip-in from Kleber put Bayern back in front, 68-67 with 50 seconds to go. After Alberto Diaz made both free throws on the other end, Johnson drove the lane for a layup high off the glass and a 70-69 lead. The hosts forced a turnover on the ensuing possession and all but ran out the clock as Unicaja never managed to attempt another shot.

"It was a tough and close game. It is good for us to play a game like this and finish it this way. Those games are not sometimes good to watch, but they are certainly exciting for everybody, but the coaches. We lose years and years of hair with this type of game, but it is part of our job. Unicaja is currently in good competition shape, they beat Barcelona in overtime over the weekend in the Spanish League, and had several consecutive wins before that, and they found their mechanism, automatism, and I was very concerned about this game. We were missing little bit of energy due to some fever issues with some of our players, so this was a tough game energy-wise for us. We had 10 turnovers in the first half, and we should have closed the game at the end of third quarter when we were up by 10. But we missed a layup, a tap-in, and after that they had a 1-17 run. We managed to come back somehow with a very good defensive effort, and a belief, which I liked. But we have to be more precise. Offensively I would like to see players play with confidence, and shoot when they are open. It is an important win for us, and I repeat it is important to win tough games like this."

"When the score is as close as in this game, I think both teams deserve to win. But we had too many turnovers, we played really bad one-on-one defense, especially in the end, and had terrible defensive rebounding almost the entire game. But the worst part was how we begun the third quarter, like we were up by 20. They were killing us from the beginning, until we were able to understand we are playing Bayern, in Europe, and we are not in playing in the playground in my neighborhood. But there are probably many things to learn for the games that follow."
