Bayern stops Zalgiris for second straight win

FC Bayern Munich won back-to-back games for the first time this season with an 88-84 effort at home over Zalgiris Kaunas on Friday. Derrick Williams tallied a career-high 27 points, including 3 three-pointers, to go with 7 rebounds for the winners. Stefan Jovic, Nihad Dedovic and Vladimir Lucic all added 11 points for Bayern, which improved to 6-6 and now shares in a four-way tie for sixth place. Leo Westermann hit 5 of 7 three-pointers in scoring 19 points with 6 assists, while Aaron White added 12 points in the loss.

Bayern needed more than 3 minutes to score while Davies gave Zalgiris a 2-6 lead. Jovic then tallied 5 points in a 9-0 run, however, as the hosts surged ahead 11-6. Marius Grigonis ended the Zalgiris drought and Derrick Walton trimmed the deficit to 13-12, but Petteri Koponen’s three-ball made it 18-12 after 10 minutes. Williams tallied the first 4 points of the second quarter to close another 9-0 run and give Bayern a 22-12 advantage. Westermann and Arturas Milaknis both hit from long range for the guests but Maodo Lo nailed a three-ball of his own and had a three-point play before Williams struck from deep for a 35-23 margin. Grigonis and Milaknis were both on target from long range for Zalgiris but Bayern still led 46-38 at the break. Zalgiris held Bayern scoreless for the first 3 minutes of the second half while using a 0-9 run to take the lead 46-47. That started the game going back and forth through 10 lead changes or ties. Westermann hit 5 points for Zalgiris and Williams scored 4 points for Bayern, which led 63-61 after 30 minutes. White opened the final quarter with 4 points to put Zalgiris back ahead 63-65. Bayern answered with a 10-0 surge with triples from Lucic and Williams to go up 73-65. Free throws by Davies snapped a four-minute Zalgiris drought and another Westermann triple helped lower the deficit to 76-74. Bayern responded with a 7-2 run to go up 83-76 but Westermann hit another long ball and Zalgiris was down just 83-81 with 32 seconds to play. Dedovic answered with a layup and then Williams iced the game with 2 free throws with 1.7 seconds left.

Game changing sequence

After Leo Westermann hit his final three-pointer to cut the gap to 83-81, Nihad Dedovic answered with a big layup to restore a four-point lead. And Derrick Williams finished off the game with his foul shots.

Head Coaches

RADONJIC, DEJAN
FC Bayern Munich
"I am very satisfied with the game we played. We played really good in the first half. We made some mistakes on defense. They played really good, smart, with a lot of energy and focus. But in the end, it was a close game and it was another success for us."
JASIKEVICIUS, SARUNAS
Zalgiris Kaunas
"We can't expect to win on the road if we allow opponents to score more than 80 points. The first half was especially bad. Even when we switched defensive systems, we couldn't cut more points out. I take part of the blame for Derrick Williams getting hot as we risked on his shots a bit early on. When he got going he also made some tough ones. I want to thank all the travelling fans of Zalgiris. Even if we played on the road, we felt like playing home with their loud support. It is a bit sad that we couldn't give them the win tonight."

Players

WILLIAMS, DERRICK
FC Bayern Munich
"I'm just glad we came out with the win. We had a lot of good ups, some downs. We stuck through it and hit some big shots. Lucic hit some big shots, Dedovic hit a nice layup at the end. It was a good team effort. Every game I feel like I am getting stronger. It’s a toast to these guys. They are helping me out, coaches are helping me out – from the first to the last. And I think that's where the team chemistry comes into play. You have to have a full team in order to do that and with this win I think we are officially here."
JOVIC, STEFAN
FC Bayern Munich
"I am very satisfied with the game we played. We played really good in the first half. We made some mistakes on defense. They played really good, smart, with a lot of energy and focus. But in the end, it was a close game and it was another success for us."
WESTERMANN, LEO
Zalgiris Kaunas
"As we expected, it was a tough game. They came to the game with a lot of physicality and we had problems to respond in the first quarter. After, when we got into the game on offense, we were unable to make enough stops. One more time, we allowed over 80 points, 88 in fact, and that's way too much, especially when we play outside of our arena."
