MHP RIESEN Ludwigsburg beats ALBA in all-German League clash

MHP RIESEN Ludwigsburg completed a sweep of German League rival ALBA Berlin and moved into at least second place in Group B with a 79-90 victory at Mercedes-Benz Arena in the German capital on Tuesday. Brad Loesing scored 18, David McCray 16, Royce O’Neale 14 and Mustafa Shakur collected 12 points and 10 assists for the winners, who moved into second place with a 4-2 record, the same as ALBA. The visitors led from start to finish after scoring the game’s first 8 points. It was 29-54 at halftime with Ludwigsburg making 8 of 12 three-pointers in the first half. ALBA used a 14-0 run to start the fourth quarter to give its fans hope, but Ludwigsburg responded before the situation grew dire. Eldemdin Kikanovic and Dragan Milosavljevic scored 18 points apiece for ALBA and Jordan Taylor added 14 in defeat.

A pair of McCray triples and O’Neale free throws gave Ludwigsburg a 0-8 start. After a Mitchell Watt tip-in got the hosts on the scoreboard, O’Neale added a three-pointer and a block. Kikanovic helped the hosts close the gap to 10-15 with 8 points, but Loesing added another Ludwigsburg three and Tekele Cotton’s steal and layup established a 10-point lead. Ludwigsburg reeled off 9 straight points with Cotton draining another triple to make it 12-29. Will Cherry’s first basket and O’Neale free throws made it 14-31 after 10 minutes. Loesing and Shakur each scored twice in a 2-10 run to start the second quarter. Threes by Adam Waleskowski and Loesing pushed the difference to 21-47. Kreso Loncar and Shawn Huff traded threes before Shakur made it a 29-point game. Niels Giffey was fouled making a three and sank the resulting free throws to put 29-54 on the scoreboard at halftime.

ALBA’s defense held Ludwigsburg without a basket for the first six minutes of the second half. Taylor and Milosavljevic heated up as the hosts closed the gap to 15. However McCray scored 5 points in a 0-9 run capped by Shakur free throws to make it 42-66. McCray and huff knocked down threes to keep Ludwigsburg comfortable. Kikanovic’s free throws ended the third quarter at 51-75. ALBA took charge in the fourth quarter with 14 unanswered points; Milosavljevic and Taylor led the way. After Shakur ended the Ludwigsburg drought with free throws, Cherry’s triple made it 68-77 with two and a half minutes remaining. O’Neale and Cotton scored to help ice the game with time to spare.

"Ludwigsburg deserved this win without any doubt. In the second half we played better, but I have to apologize to our fans for the first half. I can’t remember that we ever played like this. Maybe my team didn’t handle the recent successes well. If we are not ready to give 100 percent for 40 minutes, we can lose every game. We do not have the quality or experience to win in other ways. What we have to do is to fight with 100 percent.”

"I am very proud that my club won for the first time since 1993 in Berlin. It was also a very important win for us in this group. We had two injured players with Trice and Munoz, but our bench did a great job today – especially David McCray. For the first 19 minutes we played excellently. Then ALBA fought back and we started to commit stupid fouls. ALBA had the momentum in the end and I am happy the game did not go a couple of minutes longer."
