Alba Berlin beat Krasnye Krylia 68-72 on Tuesday night at the Universal Sports Hall and finished with a 6-0 record in Group H. The German side had nothing else to play for in the final week of the regular season, since they had already clinched first place and a spot in the Last 16. After missing out on the next round by losing to Caserta in Week 5, Krylia was hoping to at least finish at an even record, but will say goodbye to the competition at 2-4. Bryce Taylor paced the winners with 22 points and Lucca Staiger added 13 with 3 triples, while Patrick Femerling and Yassin Idbihi had 10 each. Berlin finishes the regular season as one of two unbeaten teams in the Eurocup alongside Benetton Bwin. Primoz Brezec had another monster night for the Red Wings with 23 points and 17 rebounds, but ultimately it was not enough against the group winners. Gerald Green added 13 points for the hosts and Brion Rush tallied 8.
The Red Wings went to Brezec early and attacked Femerling in the paint as the big man scored 7 of the host’s first 11 points. Berlin got the lead, 11-13, after baskets by Staiger and Idbidhi, though the visitors were not able to hold on by the end of one, as Brezec proved unstoppable and Green got hot, netting his first 5 points to close the period with the hosts in front, 21-27. Ibdihi and Rush traded baskets to start the second and Femerling got going in the paint for Berlin, though Brezec was the focal point of Krasnye Krylia’s offense once more and there was little Berlin could do about it. Marko Marinovic finally hit the visitor’s first three pointer of the night after 10 unsuccessful attempts by Berlin that kept them at 24-29, and Femerling scored his 8th point before Alexander Anisimov hit a jumper and the hosts again went to Brezec inside. The half was reached with a Idbihi two pointer and a 37-38 score.
Femerling reached double digits, and Taylor got his 17th point to start the second half, as Alba berlin got the lead back and extended it to 39-45 with a Staiger three pointer, though it was all back and forth at that point. Alexander Fomin added 4 quick points and Brezec powered through for a bucket as Staiger again launched a long range bomb that hit the marc. The guard was on fire, and he made another one, his third of the night, to make it 54-58 with a quarter to play. Idbihi and Nesterov traded baskets to start the final period, and a Green three pointer and layup even put Wloclawek up, 61-60. But Sven Schultze hit a key three pointer for Alba, as the triple fest continued and flip flopped the score to 61-63. The visitors pressed defensively and sealed the glass the rest of the way, never allowing Krasnye Krylia to get in front again. Nesterov hit a jumper and Brezec rounded out another impressive offensive showing with the 68-70 score after Anisimov missed a triple, but it was Marinovic who wrapped it up from the line.
