Paul Miller - Anwil (photo wtkanwil.com - Piotr Kieplin) To give its fans something to remember, Anwil Wloclawek was able to exit the Eurocup with its first victory by beating Caserta of Italy 81-71 on Tuesday in Poland. The game had no ramifications in the Group H standings, which had already been determined. But the hosts, who improved to 1-5, had reason to feel good about stopping a team heading to the Last 16. Caserta finished 3-3 and had clinched second place a week earlier. Paul Miller led the winners with 17 points and Darryl Thompson added 13, while Chris Thomas had 10 and Nikola Jovanovic scored 9 and grabbed 7 boards. Caserta was paced by Timmy Bowers, with 22 points, Luca Garri with 17 and 7 rebounds, and Ebi Ere, who scored 10.

Both teams started aggressively, with Garri and Andrzej Pluta trying three-pointers and missing before Aaron Doornekamp and Pluta hit from beyond the arc for a 7-7 score. Garri and Timmy Bowers went to work inside for the visitors, while Wloclawek was content shooting from the perimeter, as Darryl Thompson hit another there. Bowers was all over the floor, also scoring a triple for a 10-14 score. Looking for a reaction, Anwil opted to tighten the knots on defense, which fueled a 5-0 run to close the quarter as the hosts forced Doornekamp and Lucasz Koszarek into turnovers to take a 17-16 first-quarter lead. Ere, the previous week’s hero, finally scored his first basket, a triple, to start the second quarter, putting his team back on top. Eric Hicks answered with 5 consecutive points for the hosts before Thompson added a layup, Tomasz Celej dunked an offensive rebound and Miller added a layup for a 31-22 Anwil lead. Ere took matters into his own hands then as Caserta showed good balance with an inside-outside attack, though only hitting 45% of their shots and losing the first half's rebounding battle, 14-16. As Caserta mustered a 0-8 run and 33-35 lead entering the break, Anwil reached it wondering about its chances at any victory.

Miller answered the call to start the second half with an emphatic dunk and a layup to put Anwil back in front. Thomas also got into the scoring mix, making shots and grabbing boards to take command of the game. Eric Williams and Bowers banged some for Caserta, but Davis showed off his all-around skills with a triple that all of a sudden made it 42-37 in favor of the hosts. With Anwil attacking the paint and the rim, Caserta looked to perimeter shooting for points, and effectively stretched the defense with an Ere three-pointer, though Thompson converted a pair of baskets and Pluta a jumper, extending the lead to 54-47. Bowers and Hicks traded free throws, but it was Koszarek scoring from beyond the arc who made it 57-52 with a quarter to go. Thompson and Garri traded layups to start the last quarter, but the game quickly tightened. It took 2 minutes for Thomas to score again on a driving layup. Garri stepped up for Caserta in crunch time, nailing a three-pointer to make it 61-59. The visitors kept aggressive, as Bowers scored on a dunk and another Garri basket tied it at 63-63. But Jovanovic then hit a three-pointer and Anwil's defense forced 2 Caserta turnovers. With Jovanovic assuming responsibilities and driving for a 72-65 lead, it was Martin Colussi and Garri again scoring field goals to make it a one possession game with over a minute left. Thomas hit a layup to make it 74-69 and Jovanovic added another before Colussi scored at 76-71. But Caserta was out of time and forced to foul. Anwil saw their chance and did not miss, even adding a Pluta triple for a more enjoyable double-digit victory, the hosts' first and last of this season's Eurocup.

"First of all, I am happy that we won this game. Of course I need to say that this game wasn’t so important for Caserta, like it was for us, but I am also happy of how we played. We didn’t play like we had played in some games before, but obviously there is a lot of work in front of us, especially in defense. I think that defensively we can play better. Our goal was today to stop Caserta on less than 20 points in each quarter and we made it, because they scored 16, 19, 17 and 19 points and some of them were because of our little mistakes in defense, not because of their offense. I don’t want to say the defense is the most important thing for us, but I am sure there is great defensive potential in this team and we must win thanks to it.

Moreover I want to point out that we must remember about the last seconds of each defensive action. I am looking at the statistics right now I am seeing that our opponent had 14 offensive rebounds, so it means, that we still forget about the last seconds of defense. It doesn’t matter against which team we play, we may let them have only seven-eight offensive rebounds.

When it comes to offense... We can play very fast so we must speed up the game. Today we scored a lot of fast break points and I liked that. Good defense gives simple solutions and the easiest ways to score baskets. However, I am little disappointed of how we played in the first quarter because in that period of time we made eight or nine turnovers while during the whole game we made 18 mistakes. It must be better in this element because we need to be more consequent and focused on each detail - all five guys who are on the floor in the particular moment. Besides, I want so say that another important thing was that today we made more two-point shots than three-point ones, while in two previous games, my first two in Anwil, we had definitely made more triples. Distance shots cannot be our first offensive option, because we need to use more inside shots and penetrations.

And the last detail I would like to tell about is the bench. I liked that everybody who came to the floor, gave a good impulse and helped the team. Especially at the beginning of the second quarter when we played good defense."

"Firstly I want to underline that today we played without our two very important players, Fabio di Bella and Jumaine Jones because they have some problems with injuries and we thought that it will be better if they stay at home in Caserta. Thanks to this situation, two other guys who normally don’t play or they don’t play so many minutes, had a chance to show their skills. I mean Domenico Marzaioli and Salvatore Parrillo who both got about eight-nine minutes. In fact, Anwil won this game but the advantage of ten points seems to be too big. We were so close to them during the game, however we had some problems with pick and rolls. We try to change some solutions on the floor but the turnovers didn’t let us cut the opponent’s lead. Congratulations to Anwil."

"I won’t be analyzing this game because the coach did it in a very detailed way. I will tell only that we wanted to win today’s match so much. We realized that the old year is coming to an end and the way we will finish it, it will have an impact of how we will be playing at the beginning of the new one. So we wanted to win and to play efficiently and I think we made it. In my opinion, our progress is clearly visible, although we and our new coach have been together for only a few days. I am pretty sure that our play was definitely better if we compare it with our previous matches. Now we have Christmas and some time to relax but after that we will come back to hard work and focus on Polish league. We have a game on the second of January we hope to start the new year positively too."

"It is very nice feeling to play here in Wloclawek once again. Everyone knows that I spent here two good years and I have to admit that it was strange for me when the fans weren’t supporting me, like it was some years ago. It was of course because I changed the side and today I came here as an opponent. Anyway, I want to congratulate Anwil. I think they needed this win very strongly, especially because they changed the head coach some days ago. Today they showed a piece of good basketball and aggressiveness, while we had some problems with intensity. We were so slow and this is why we made a lot of mistakes that we usually don’t make. Moreover we played without two guys and our play was so strange. Despite all of the obstacles, we were so close to Anwil during the whole, but in the end our turnovers killed us. All in all, Anwil deserved to win today’s game."
