It took a thriller that lasted into overtime, but DKV Joventut of Spain can call itself qualified to the second round of the ULEB Cup after prevailing 84-90 on the road at Snaidero Udine in Group A on Tuesday. Joventut lifted its record to 5-4, tying Udine for second place and proofing itself against any potential ties that may come with the last regular season game next week. It was a tale of two halves as Joventut took comfortable leads in the first 20 minutes, while it was up to Udine to make a comeback to a slim lead in the final seconds of regulation time. But veteran center Zan Tabak tied for Joventut from the foul line with 2 seconds to go, and in overtime point guard Carles Marco was decisive for the visitors. Shooter Juan Alberto Espil was the scoring leader of the night, drilling 32 points in 36 minutes, including 6 of 8 three-pointers. Forward Maceo Baston tallied 18 points and added 6 boards for the winners, while Tabak set a double-double with 11 points and 14 rebounds. Demetrius Alexander led Snaidero, already qualified before playing this game, with 23 points. Teenage guard Alksnader Vujacic nailed 18 more, Misan Nikagbatse posted 15 and Michele Mian contributed 10.

Espil started the game on fire and Joventut of Badalona showed immediately its intentions by making a 0-14 run to command the scoreboard after 4 minutes. Snaidero's first basket didn't come for 5 full minutes, and then the visitors increased their advantage to 10-29. The first period ended 17-31 with Espil already having scored 15 points with 5 of 6 threes. Espil was benched in the second perio and the home team started also to play a tougher, more aggressive man-to-man defense. When Jeff Stern made a dunk after 15 minutes of play, Snaidero all the way back within 30-36. Nikola Radulovic answered by scoring 9 points in the period and Vujacic netted a jumper to make it 38-40. Paco Vazquez scored the final basket at the buzzer for a 38-42 lead for the Spaniards at the break.

In the third period Snaidero reduced the gap to 47-48, but Baston with his offensive rebounds and skills close to the basket rejected that comeback attempt. Joventut remainedl comfortably ahead 53-62 after 30 minutes. The last quarter started with local fans trying to rally their team, which responded with an 8-0 run. Paul Burke had a four-point play - three-point shot plus free throw - and Misan Nikagbatse scored to make it 61-62, but Baston again pushed his team ahead solidly at 63-70 in the 37th minute. Two straight threes-pointers of Alexander and Nikagbatse again gave to Snaidero the lead with less than a half-minute to go, then the free throws of Tabak to tie forced overtime. There Paco Vazquez and Marco were decisive with their long-distance shots.

"Despite the loss, I have to talk about two important and fudamnetal things: first is the intensity and determination showed for all the fourty minutes by my players, second is the incredible shooting performance of our opponents. Badalona won the game shooting 30 of 43 field goals. I think that it would be difficult for all the teams to win a game against a similar opponent. After stopping the scoring skills of Espil, we were not able to stop Vazquez and then Marco. But having just a few outside players to alternate on the court, I have to say we were tired in the overtime."

DKV Joventut assistant coach Joan Plaza:

"It was very important for our team to win this game after losing the last one at home. We have played this game in not a very good condition because we had a big struggle in the last Spanish League game but we were able to take a big advantage beginning the game, then later in the match we used well all the positive situations to manage the score and to win. Radulovic' We needs to work hard on defense to win the games."

"The game against Badalona was difficult, they are a good team, and we knew perfectly before starting the game. We were able to rally a big deficit and also to take a slim advantage on my baskets and Vujacic's. In the first period, when Badalona took a big advanatge my team lacked defensive communication. I have played an average game, but we have to do better because there is still a long way to do in Europe and in the Italian League."

"After this victory we are matemathically qualified to the second round, and this is the most important thing, we have played a good game using well all the opportunities in the final minutes. The next game at home against Gravelines will be just an exhibition, but to win. Why I was on the floor just a few minutes? I don't know, but after playing with the Italian National Team on November, my minutes became less."
