Cedomir Vitkovac - Buducnost Voli - EC12 (photo Bilbao Basket)KK Buducnost VOLI opened the Top 16 with a bang by routing BC Triumph Lyubertsy 90-69 in Podgorica. Cedomir Vitkovac starred with 24 points and 12 rebounds, plus 7 of 8 free throws made after drawing 10 fouls to lead the winners. The Montenegrin champs opened strong and led by 13 in the first quarter before Triumph rallied back. The visitors scored the first 7 points of the second half to take a 47-51 edge, but soon Aleksa Popovic, Vitkovac and Strahinja Milosevic combined for all the points in a 15-0 run that bridged the third and fourth quarters and Buducnost never looked back. Ball control was a key to the win; Buducnost registered 10 steals while Triumph had just 1. Aleksa Popovic added 17 points, Gerald Lee posted 13 and Marko Popovic 10 for the victors. Tasamin Mitchell led Triumph with 20 points, Tywain McKee tallied 18 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists and Kyle Landry netted 10 in defeat.

Vitkovac triggered a great start for the hosts with a three-pointer, an assist to Lee and a pair of fouls drawn as Buducnost took a 6-2 lead. McKee hit back for Triumph, but Vitkovac and Lee each scored again as the lead soared to 12-4 before Triumph called timeout just over three minutes into the game. Even after that Vitkovac pout in his own miss to make it a double-digit game. Sergey Karasev connected from downtown for Triumph, however the lead swelled to 20-7 when Nikola Ivanovic converted a basket-plus-foul. Mitchell scored 6 straight for Triumph as it began its comeback. Kyle Landry added a three-pointer and despite Vitkovac’s 11 point on the opening quarter, Artem Kuzyakin made it 24-20 after 10 minutes. A three from Demarquis Bost and another bucket from Vitkovac extended the lead back to 7. McKee and Karasev kept clawing away for the visitors. Mitchel gave Triumph its first lead, 35-36, midway through the second quarter. Lee put Buducnost back on top, but the lead was a mere 47-44 at halftime.

Triumph stormed ahead at the start of the second half with 7 straight points to take a 47-51 lead on a Yuval Naimy three-pointer. But after Mitchell scored a basket four minutes into the third quarter, the visitors went cold. Buducnost scored 13 unanswered points to finish the stanza – all from Aleksa Popovic, Vitkovac and Strahinja Milosevic – before Milosevic made it 64-53 with the first basket of the fourth quarter. Kyle Landry drew the visitors within 8 from the line only to see Marko Popovic bury a triple and Vitkovac reached 20 points in making it a 15-point game. The lead peaked hit 77-58 after Marko Popovic and Bost nailed back-to-back threes with a little less than four minutes to play, essentially wrapping up the win.

Head Coaches

RADONJIC, DEJAN
Buducnost VOLI Podgorica
"Triumph tonight lost its first game in the Eurocup, and of course we have to be happy with our start. In the first half, we suffered a drop in concentration and mistakes in defense. With a good attack we replaced these failures, but, overall, this was not the way to beat Triumph. We knew we had to play like we did in the second half. The defense looked great, we were able to neutralize their quality and our offense was nice, especially in the last quarter. We made a big difference at the end, so we are therefore very pleased. Congratulations to the players, and thanks to the fans who came in such large numbers."

Players

IVANOVIC, NIKOLA
Buducnost VOLI Podgorica
"In the first half, we had a few mistakes in defense, and after that it looked much better. We managed to beat a team that scores a lot of points, so we deserve to celebrate, and in the end it was easier than expected. I think the point difference in the end will mean a lot. I hope we will continue like tonight for the rest of the season."
MITCHELL, TASMIN
BC Triumph Lyubertsy
"We didn’t bring our best game tonight. We started slow. A team of our talent need to stay focused the whole game. We lost our concentration in the last 15 minutes."
