Nizhny uses 14 threes to cruise past MZT

Previously-qualified Nizhny Novgorod led from start to finish en route to an 82-97 road win over winless MZT Skopje on Wednesday. Nizhny hit 6 of 8 three-point shots in the first half and built a 34-52 halftime lead on the way to improving to 4-3 in Group A and securing at least third place in the standings. MZT dropped to 0-7. Nizhny had six scorers in double digits and shot 14 of 26 from three-point range. Deandre Kane scored 22 points by making 4 of 5 triples. Tomislav Zubcic and Kenneth Boynton scored 12 apiece, and Petr Gubanov had 11 points in victory. Jure Lalic paced MZT with 23 points, while Charlon Kloof had 15 points, 9 assists and 6 rebounds in defeat.

With 7 points from Kane and a triple from Ivan Strebkov, the visitors opened 4-14 lead after only five minutes, before a three from Gubanov and a fastbreak basket from Boynton helped open a 12-26 lead after 10 minutes. Lalic found ways to score for the hosts, but a three from Zubcic helped Nizhny race to a 14-34 margin early in the second quarter. Lalic and Kloof helped cut it to 25-38, but Nizhny was always in control. The visitors led 34-52 at the break and the margin never dropped below 13 points the rest of the way.

NAZOR, ANTE
MZT Skopje Aerodrom
“I'm not satisfied with the way we played tonight against a strong team from Russia. It's never good when you receive 97 points playing on your home court. In the first half we had 11 turnovers, which is the number we had in the whole game against Buducnost a couple of days before. We must be better, especially in defense; there is a lot of space for improvement. We had some injured players that couldn't play tonight, but that can’t be an alibi for our defeat tonight.”
STALBERGS, ARTURS
Nizhny Novgorod
“We followed our plan, and one of our goals was to play aggressive, full-court pressure from the first second. That gave us a lot of energy, we got some steals and easy baskets, which gave us a decent lead that we kept until the end of the game.”
