Doncic sparkles as Real Madrid mauls Bamberg

Real Madrid delivered an outstanding all-round performance to cruise to a 95-72 victory against Brose Bamberg, securing a fifth straight win in the Spanish capital. The outcome was never in doubt after the Spanish side needed just three minutes to establish a double-digit lead and only a late flurry from Bamberg prevented an even more emphatic scoreline. Teenager Luka Doncic led the way with 16 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists, while backcourt partner Sergio Llull added 14 points and 6 assists. Fit-again big man Trey Thompkins and center Gustavo Ayon both scored 13, but this was a true team performance from a Madrid side that hit 15 three-pointers and won the rebounding battle 40-26. Bamberg, which was missing last week’s MVP Fabien Causeur through illness, found late life through Lucca Staiger, who scored all of his 18 points from downtown, and Daniel Theis, who finished with 15. Maodo Lo added 13 points.

Madrid made a blistering start, scoring the first 11 points without reply through five different players. Nicolo Melli’s triple got Bamberg on the board, but Madrid broke away again and Llull finished the first quarter with back-to-back triples to make it 24-9. Leon Radosevic and Melli scored the opening baskets of the second quarter, but Madrid responded with an 11-0 run to take the lead beyond 20. Jaycee Carroll’s triple made it a 25-point lead, before Lo beat the half-time buzzer to make it 47-25 at the break. Madrid’s dominance immediately resumed as Llull’s triple delivered the first basket of the second half, and 5 quick points from Doncic extended the lead to 28. Back-to-back steals and scores from Ayon were the highlight of the third quarter before Llull ended it in style with a stunning long-range rainbow triple on the buzzer. Another three from Thompkins sent his team 37 ahead, before Theis and Staiger exploded for a combined 23 points in a 9-27 run to significantly reduce the deficit. But Madrid had already done more than enough and eased to a comprehensive victory.

"Congratulations to the guys for the victory. We worked well from the beginning. We were solid from the defensive point of view, and controlling the rebounds allowed us to play at our pace against a team which does that quite well. That gave us the advantage and it was key how we faced the third quarter, not to let them back into the game. I’m really happy because we beat a team that was doing well in the EuroLeague and we made it easier than it might have been. Now we have to move ahead because we play in Belgrade on Thursday. It’s difficult to highlight anyone because everyone did a good job, but I’m happy Trey Thompkins is back. He was solid, he scored and provided an offensive reference. Randolph would have been forcing it to play, it wasn’t necessary with the way the game was going. We’ll see with Jonas, we don’t want to take any chances. Doncic’s numbers were really good, but that’s not the only thing that guides me, he also did some excellent defensive work."

"This was the lowest point of our EuroLeague campaign so far. On one side there is a great team, Real, and we all know how good they can be. On the other side we simply didn’t respect ourselves enough to play the game. No energy, nothing. If I try to comment on the game through basketball vision, I wouldn’t have anything smart to say. Now we have two options: we go all tomorrow to commit suicide or we regroup and bounce back. It was a very bad night for the coach, for the players, for the entire team, but I believe at this point it makes no sense to point fingers. We had a nightmare night, but I guarantee we are not going to commit suicide. We have to bounce back, we have to respect our hard work in every game, this was the first game we played horrible, not just the players, the coaches as well. The best thing we can do is go back to the gym, practise and prepare for Thursday night."

"There are no easy games in the EuroLeague. We started strong, very concentrated, defending well, controlling rebounds, moving the ball well. I think it was one of our best games on offense, playing at a rhythm which benefitted us. At halftime we were conscious that we had a big advantage, but if you relax in a game like this, they can score a lot of points quickly, as we saw in the last quarter. We had to come out with intensity in the third quarter, and we continued to move the ball well and defend well."

"We played really well as a team. We were moving the ball, everyone was making shots, we were making plays on the defensive end and when we do that, we are a really good team. I feel great, but I definitely have to get back in better shape like I was before, but that comes with playing and practicing and getting back to my rhythm. It’s coming. "

"We played a very bad game. We had an awful start in the first five minutes and that was important because we immediately gave them rhythm and confidence. When you start like that in this arena it’s all downhill and a tough ask to come back. We played some good minutes in the fourth quarter, but overall it was a bad game for us. But with the EuroLeague format this year, we’re already thinking about the next game at home, which is a big one for us."
