One of the most promising big men in world basketball is set to make his Eurocup debut next season, as Herbalife Gran Canaria reached a new agreement with center Walter Tavares to keep working together until the end of the 2016-17 season, the club announced Thursday. Tavares (2.20 meters, 22 years old) had a breakout season in Gran Canaria, averaging 6 points, 6.8 rebounds and 1.5 blocks in 35 Spanish League games this season. He helped Gran Canaria reach the Copa del Rey tournament and the Spanish League playoffs, allowing his team to get its best regular season results ever, 22-12. He has also played for La Caja Gran Canaria Las Palmas and UB La Palma before becoming a member of Gran Canaria's first team in 2012. Tavares is also a member of the Cape Verde national team and played at AfroBasket 2013, averaging 8.1 points, 6 rebounds and 1.6 blocks in 7 games. With great mobility and a wingspan of 2.36 meters, Tavares will be a defensive wall for all opponents - and one of the most exciting players to watch in the 2014-15 Eurocup.
