Seven months after CAI Zaragoza released Giorgi Shermadini to play for Olympiacos Piraeus, the center is back with the club. Shermadini (2.16 meters, 25 years old) agreed to a one-year deal with CAI, the club announced Monday. He started the previous season in Zaragoza and averaged 9.8 points on 93.7% free throw shooting (59-of-63) and 5.6 rebounds in 16 Eurocup games. Shermadini also helped Zaragoza reach the Copa del Rey semifinals for the first time in club history. However when injuries hit at his former team, Olympiacos, with whom Shermadini won the 2013 Euroleague, he left CAI to re-sign with the Reds. There he posted 5.7 points and 3.6 rebounds in helping the team reach the Euroleague playoffs.

Shermadini emerged as one of the game’s top young big men over two seasons with Union Olimpija Ljubljana and Bennet Cantu between 2010 and 2012. His performance index rating of 15.3 per game ranked seventh in the Turkish Airlines Euroleague in the 2011-12 season with Cantu. Prorated over 40 minutes his index was 28.3, which ranked third behind only Euroleague MVP Andrei Kirilenko and All-Euroleague center Nenad Krstic. Shermadini grew up at Maccabi Tbilisi in his native Georgia before joining Panathinaikos in 2008. After two seasons as a reserve with the Greens, in which he won the 2009 Euroleague, Shermadini went on loan for a season to Union Olimpija in Slovenia. He has also played for Maccabi Electra Tel Aviv in Israel. Among his accomplishments are winning two Greek League titles, one Greek Cup and one Slovenian Cup. Shermadini is also a member of the Georgian national team.
