Euroleague Basketball joins the family of Basket CAI Zaragoza and all of Spanish and European basketball in mourning the loss Monday of the club's longtime head coach, José Luis Abós, at the age of 53. Mr. Abós, who was born and raised in Zaragoza, announced in August that he would not be on the bench this season due to a long-term illness. He had been head coach at CAI since 2009 and won the Spanish second division (LEB) with the club in his first season. Since then, the team has been in the first division (ACB). Mr. Abós had started his coaching career as an assistant for Zaragoza in the early 1990s. Mr. Abós led CAI last season in the club's Eurocup debut.
"It saddens all of us in European basketball to lose, well before his time, someone who loved our sport and gave so much effort to reviving his hometown club in a great basketball city like Zaragoza," Jordi Bertomeu, President & CEO of Euroleague Basketball, said Monday. "Our deepest condolences are with his family, friends and club at this difficult moment."
