Quarterfinals at a Glance: FC Bayern Munich vs. Unicaja Malaga

Tough defense will be on display in the series between FC Bayern Munich and Unicaja Malaga, which rank among the best four teams in the EuroCup in terms of points allowed. Bayern allowed the second-fewest points per game (73.4) and Unicaja checked in at fourth (75.9). Bayern has used its tenacious defense to win nine consecutive games going back to Round 7 of the regular season. One of those wins came at Unicaja’s expense; Bayern swept Unicaja in Regular Season Group C. Nick Johnson scored 20 points to lead Bayern to a 72-69 victory in Munich and Vladimir Lucic had 18 in Bayern’s 62-74 win in Malaga. This is the second season in a row that Bayern has reached the EuroCup Quarterfinals, but it has never advanced past this stage. Unicaja is making its EuroCup debut this season. Bayern owes a lot of its success to its dominant play inside; it is not only the top rebounding side (39.4 rpg.) in the competition, but Bayern allows the second-fewest rebounds (31.1), too! Two of the heroes on that front are Maxi Kleber (10.1 ppg., 6.8 rpg.), who is fourth in the EuroCup rebounding, and Devin Booker (12.9 ppg., 6.5 rpg.), who was second in the Top 16 with 8.0 rebounds per game. Johnson (11.6 ppg.) is Bayern’s other main scorer. Bayern also made the most free throws (16.8) with the third-best accuracy (78.6%). However, Bayern also made the most turnovers of any playoff team and fourth most in the EuroCup this season (15.4) and has made the third-fewest threes (7.1). Unicaja slumps into the playoffs after losing three of its last four games to place second in Group H with a 3-3 record. Kyle Fogg (13.9 ppg.) has emerged as its go-to scorer alongside three-point threat Jamar Smith (10.9 ppg.) and center Dejan Musli (11.3 ppg.).
