FC Bayern Munich dismissed head coach Sasa Djordjevic from his position on Thursday. His release came less than a week after the team was eliminated from the 7DAYS EuroCup in a sweep by Darussafaka Istanbul in a sweep in the semifinals. Assistant coach Emir Mutapcic will head the team in an interim basis while the search for a permanent replacement is underway.
This was Djordjevic's second season with Bayern. He led the team to the EuroCup Quarterfinals in 2017 and fourth place in the German League. This season he led Bayern to the EuroCup Semifinals with a 16-5 record, won the German Cup and leaves with Bayern atop the German League with a 23-2 record.
"After the impressions and developments we have registered over a long period of time, we have now decided to give a new leadership approach to our highly talented team," general manager Marko Pesic said. "This may come as a surprise to outsiders, not least because of our position as first in the BBL standings, which is understandable. But everyone can assume that this was not an easy decision and was made after intensive considerations of all participants and committees with only the team and the goals of our ambitious project in mind. FC Bayern Basketball would like to thank Sasa Djordjevic for his commitment and achievements to date. We wish him all the best for his future."
