Galatasaray Istanbul could not have a better start to the 2017-18 7DAYS EuroCup, beating beat Morabanc Andorra 84-73 at home. That is a major improvement compared to last season, when Galatasaray had to wait until Round 5 for its first victory.
In fact, Galatasaray's very first play said a lot about its stronger mentality coming into this EuroCup season. Kai Webster attacked the basket straight away, and although his layup missed, Zach Auguste came out of nowhere for a spectacular put-back dunk. With that boost, Galatasaray hit 8 of its first 10 shots to stake an 18-9 advantage. And after Andorra rallied to lead briefly at 22-23, Galatasaray bounced back with a 10-0 run, dominating the game from that point behind the unstoppable Auguste.
In his first EuroCup game ever, Auguste had 18 points, 8 rebounds and 5 blocks. Only four players before him had 5 or more blocks in their EuroCup debuts and only one of those did so in the opening game of the season. Auguste totaled 21 points in 12 Turkish Airlines EuroLeague games with Panathinaikos last season, but on Tuesday he made clear that he is ready to make the most of every opportunity he has from now on. And with 7 blocks, 11 steals and 14 offensive rebounds as a team, Galatasaray showed itself to be as hungry as when it won the competition in 2016.
