Spartak St. Petersburg fortified its frontcourt for its Eurocup return in 2012-13 by inking big man Artem Yakovenko to a two-year deal, the club announced Monday. Yakovenko (2.06 meters, 23 years old) started the 2011-12 season with BC Nizhny Novgorod, where he averaged 9.5 points and 4.5 rebounds in 8 Russian League games last season. He was sent on loan to Unics, helping his new club to reach the VTB League title game. Yakovenko has also played for Krasnie Krilya Samara, Avtodor Saratov, BC Sojuz Zaretchny, as well as for BC Khimki Moscow Region's youth teams. He helped Avtodor to win the Russian second division in 2009, reaching the EuroChallenge title game with Samara in 2010 and the Russian Cup final with Nizhny in 2011. Yakovenko is also a member of the Russian national team and has travelled to Venezuela to play at the 2012 Olympic Qualifying Tournament.
