Nick Calathes - Panathinaikos - Final Four Istanbul 2012Lokomotiv Kuban added a proven force to its lineup by signing former Euroleague champion Nick Calathes to a two-year deal. Calathes (1.98 meters, 23 years old) arrives from Panathinaikos Athens, with whom he won the 2011 Turkish Airlines Euroleague and returned to the Final Four last season. He raised his level of production from season to season and last season posted 7.6 points and 2.4 assists in 23 Euroleague games. Calathes has shown over the seasons that he has a knack for stepping up in the biggest games. He played a major defensive role in the 2011 playoffs against scoring king Juan Carlos Navarro to lead Panathinaikos to the Final Four, then led the Greens with 17 points in a semifinal win over Montepaschi Siena and turned assist man with 6 dishes in the title game against Maccabi. Last season Calathes starred with 15 points and 3 steals – both team highs – in a season-saving Game 4 win in Tel Aviv in Game 4 of the playoffs to keep the Greens on track to reach the Final Four. During his three seasons with Panathinaikos, Calathes also helped the team win two Greek League championships and one Greek Cup. In addition, he has represented the Greek national team, with whom he won the bronze medal at EuroBasket 2009.
