The player who started the most Eurocup games for VEF Riga last season, guard Dairis Bertrans, will be wearing black a long time after the Latvian champs signed him to a new three-year deal on Thursday. Bertans (1.92 meters, 23 years old) averaged 10 points, 2.5 rebounds and 2.2 assists in 11 Eurocup games last season for Riga. He was the only player to start 10 of those games, and averaged the second-most minutes, 29 per game, on the team. Bertans has played five Eurocup seasons already after debuting as a teenager with ASK Riga. After two seasons with ASK, he spent one-and-a-half with BK Venstpils of Latvia before switching to VEF Riga. Bertans is the older brother of Davis Bertans, a forward who plays for Partizan mt.s Belgrade.
