VEF Riga re-signs Berzins through 2015
Aug 02, 2012
A familiar face is set to stay in Riga long-term, as VEF announced Thursday that center Kaspars Berzins signed a new deal that will keep him in the team until the end of the 2014-15 season. Berzins (2.13 meters, 26 years old) averaged 7.8 points and 4.9 rebounds in 9 Eurocup games last season, helping VEF to reach the Last 16. In his two seasons with the club, Berzins has helped VEF to win back-to-back Latvian League titles, as well as reaching the Baltic League final in 2011. He has also played for Fuenlabrada and Unicaja in Spain, as well as for Skonto, BK Riga and Barons in his native Latvian. Berzins is also a regular member of the Latvian national team. He helped Barons to win the FIBA Eurocup and the Latvian League titles in 2008. "We are pleased to keep Kaspars Berzins, who we consider as one of the best Latvian big men of all-time and a very important player for us," VEF Riga chairman of the board Edgars Jaunups said. "We have managed to keep a core of Latvian players, which we think it is an important pillar of our success. These guys believe in our team the way we believe in them, and that has been the key to our recent success."
