Galatasaray ruled the glass to stay in Top 16 race

Galatasaray Istanbul registered an important home win against ratiopharm Ulm to improve to 3-4 and return to the thick of the Top 16 race on Wednesday. Even though Galatasaray head coach Ertugrul Erdogan stressed after the game that he was not pleased with how his team played, there was one segment in which his players were brilliant.

Led by 12 rebounds by Zach Auguste, Galatasaray shattered its club record by pulling down 53 rebounds and outrebounded the visitors by 20. Galatasaray's previous high in the competition was 44, a number the team reached twice before, most recently in February 2016. This also marked only the second time this season a team has had more than 50 rebounds in a game after Cedevita Zagreb pulled down 54 in a Round 3 win over Arka Gdynia.

Where Galatasaray really set the tone was in the first quarter when it pulled down 20 boards. Galatasaray did not allow many second-chance possessions in the early going and by controlling the glass the hosts overcame their 8 first-quarter turnovers. Ulm was held without a field goal for more than 10 minutes bridging the first and second quarter, including the final 8:30 of the opening stanza.

It was a low-scoring opening 10 minutes, which ended with Galatasaray leading 15-11 before the hosts continued the charge, using rebounds to get some easy baskets and take a 26-14 lead early in the second. Galatasaray never relinquished its lead. Ulm came close and finished with 12 offensive rebounds, but Galatasaray allowed only 4 of those in the second half, which helped fend off Ulm's comeback attempt.
