New signings and Hall return got Promitheas on track

Promitheas Patras came into its first home game of the Top 16 in a rut with three straight losses in the 7DAYS EuroCup. But two recent signings and the return of a leader helped the Greek side get back into the winning column.

Promitheas grabbed an 81-70 victory over EWE Baskets Oldenburg to improve to 1-1 in Group F and, most importantly, to defend its home court. Center Loukas Mavrokefalidis came off the Promitheas bench for a team-high 19 points while playmaker Vangelis Mantzaris collected 5 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals with 0 turnovers for a PIR of 13. Both players have a long history in international basketball and helped Promitheas right its ship.

The 35-year-old Mavrokefalidis tallied 2 points, 4 rebounds and 1 steal in his first EuroCup game with Promitheas after coming over from Ionikos. Mavrokefalidis, has six seasons of Turkish Airlines EuroLeague experience to his name, but had played the past season and a half in the Greek second division with Ionikos Nikaias. He played like he had been itching for international competition when he scored 9 straight points in a big 16-5 third-quarter run to set up the win.

Long-time Olympiacos Piraeus guard Mantzaris, who won a pair of EuroLeague crowns with the Reds, was playing his second game as well - after amassing 12 points, 5 rebounds and 6 assists in his first game after coming back to Greece from UNICS Kazan. His calming presence played a big role for Promitheas, which is happy to have him back in his homeland.

Another welcome face on the court was Langston Hall, who chipped in 10 points, 3 rebounds and 4 assists in his first game after missing the last three contests - all of them Promitheas losses.

Aside from that trio, the other big key was the number 80. Promitheas improved to 5-0 when it has scored at least 80 points, while Oldenburg dropped to 2-4 in games it didn’t reach that number.

Promitheas was one of the surprises of the 7DAYS EuroCup Regular Season in its first season in the competition. And now thanks to a duo of established veterans, the club hopes to continue its magical run.
