EWE Baskets Oldenburg announced Wednesday that team captain Rickey Paulding has agreed to a contract extension that will keep the sides together until the summer of 2022. Paulding (1.96 meters, 37 years old) is in his 13th season with Oldenburg and still playing like a man half his age. He's averaged 11.7 points in 15 7DAYS EuroCup games so far this season for Oldenburg, which holds its quarterfinals fate in its own hands when it faces Promitheas Patras of Greece in next week's Top 16 finale. Paulding has played in over 500 German League games for Oldenburg to become the club's all-time scoring champ with 6,840. He also led Oldenburg to the 2009 German championship, the 2015 German Cup and an appearance in the finals of this season's German Cup earlier this month.
After a standout college basketball career at the University of Missouri, Paulding made his pro debut in Israel with Hapoel Jerusalem and spent one season each with ASVEL Villeurbanne and Gravelines in France before settling in at Oldenburg in 2007.
"Even at 37, Rickey is still in great shape," Hermann Schüller, managing partner of EWE Baskets said. "We are fortunate to have such a basketball icon here in Oldenburg. We are very pleased that Rickey will remain with us."
"For me, the dream continues! My family and I are very happy that we can work and live with EWE Baskets and the people in this city for a little longer," said Paulding. "What we have been able to experience here over the years is something very special. That's why it's a matter close to my heart, too."
"I have said it this season: I thank God every morning for Rickey playing on my team and being our captain," Coach Mladen Drijencic added. "We must not forget: What Rickey delivers here is not normal! I've never seen an athlete like him."
