Herbalife Gran Canaria has hired Porfirio Fisac to be its head coach for the next two seasons, the club announced on Wednesday. Fisac, 55, arrives from Casademont Zaragoza, which he led to a 16-7 record in the Spanish League regular season. Zaragoza ranked third when the competition was interrupted due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He also helped Zaragoza reach the Spanish Copa del Rey tournament and the Basketball Champions League quarterfinals.
Fisac started his coaching career with Doncel Distributel in the Spanish third division. He had coached Tarragona, Ciudad Algeciras Cepsa, Gipuzkoa Basket, Baloncesto Valladolid, Baloncesto Fuenlabrada and Quesos Cerrato de Palencia of Spain before joining Zaragoza in 2018. Fisac also coached the Senegalese national team and led it to the bronze medal at FIBA AfroBasket 2017. He has won the Spanish second division title three times - with Gipuzkoa in 2006 and 2017, and with Valladolid in 2009. Fisac is now set to make his 7DAYS EuroCup coaching debut with Gran Canaria.
