Unicaja Malaga reached an agreement with playmaker Alberto Diaz to stay together for four more years, through the end of the 2023-24 season, the club announced Friday. Diaz (1.88 meters, 26 years old) averaged 5.9 points and 2.2 assists in 12 7DAYS EuroCup games with Unicaja last season. He was chosen as the 2017 EuroCup Finals MVP after leading Unicaja to the title in its first season in the competition. Diaz had a career-defining performance in Game 3 of the finals against Valencia Basket, scoring 12 points and leading Unicaja to a come-from-behind win at La Fonteta.
Born in Malaga, Diaz has played in the Unicaja system for nearly his entire career, first with its vinculated squads Unicaja II Malaga and Clinicas Rincon and then on loan with Spanish sides Bilbao Basket and Baloncesto Fuenlabrada before joining the club's first team in 2015. Diaz has also been a member of the Spanish national team. He helped Spain win a silver medal at the 2014 U20 European Championships.
