Waczynski celebrated birthday with big shots for Unicaja

Adam Waczynski came up with the perfect birthday present for himself as he used his sharpshooting skills to help Unicaja Malaga finish off a thrilling come-from-behind victory. Waczynski, who turns 31 years old on Thursday, tallied 12 of his 15 points in the fourth quarter of Unicaja's 91-87 home win over Buducnost VOLI Podgorica on Wednesday.

The Spanish side had finally pulled ahead early in the final frame only to see previously undefeated Buducnost nose back ahead by 4 points. After hitting a jumper in the lane, Waczynski canned a three-pointer from the right corner and was fouled. He made the resulting free throw for a four-point play. Waczynski followed with back-to-back three-pointers inside the 2-minute mark to make it 86-80 and give the hosts enough cushion to win the game.

"It was a very important win. Buducnost is a very good team. They were on a hot streak, so it was a tough game. You could see in the first half we were struggling, but in the second half, we played harder. We made some shots and what’s most important is that we won," said Waczynski, who had scored 11 points in his first two games of the season.

The comeback win was critical for Unicaja's confidence after the team lost in Round 2 by 10 points at Mornar Bar. And once again, it used its home cooking to prevail. Unicaja extended its EuroCup winning streak at the Martin Carpena arena to 10 games - dating back to a Game 2 loss to ALBA Berlin in the 2018-19 quarterfinals.

"It's very clear that this victory is very important for the confidence of the players," Unicaja Coach Luis Casimiro said. "The key was when we played with more confidence on offense. We took and made the open shots."

Especially birthday boy Adam Waczynski.
