Unicaja finds new coach in Katsikaris

Unicaja Malaga reached an agreement with head coach Fotis Katsikaris, who will lead the team until the end of the 2021-22 season, the club announced Thursday. Katsikaris, age 53, coached Herbalife Gran Canaria last season. He started his career with AEK Athens of his native Greek in 1998, first as assistant, and then leading the team from 2003 to 2005. He has also coach Dynamo St Petersburg and Lokomotiv Kuban Krasnodar of Russia, Valencia Basket, UCAM Murcia, Iberostar Tenerife and Bilbao Basket of Spain, Aris Thessaloniki of Greece, and Hapoel Jerusalem of Greece. Unicaja will be his seventh team in the competition, after coaching Valencia, Aris, Bilbao, Lokomotiv, Murcia and Jerusalem in the EuroCup. Katsikaris is a former EuroCup Coach of the Year; he earned the reward while taking Bilbao Basket to the championship game in 2013. Katsikaris also helped Bilbao each the Spanish League finals in 2011. His overall record in the competition is 36-23. He has also coached three seasons in the EuroLeague, for AEK Athens and Bilbao, with a record of 27-27. Additionally, Katsikaris has served as the national team coach for both Greece and Russia, and worked of Utah of the NBA as assistant coach. Katsikaris replaces Casimito, who parted ways with Unicaja earlier this week.
