MoraBanc Andorra strengthened its backcourt days before the start of the 2021-22 7DAYS EuroCup campaign by inking guard Gal Mekel for the remainder of the season, the club announced Monday. Mekel (1.92 meters, 33 years old) arrives from Unicaja Malaga, where he averaged 7.7 points and 3.0 assists in 3 EuroCup games last season. He started his professional career in his native Israel, playing for Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv and Altshuler Saham Galil Gilboa. Mekel has also played for Benetton Treviso and Reggio Emilia of Italy, Maccabi Bazan Haifa of Israel, Dallas and New Orleans of the NBA, Nizhny Novgorod and Zenit St Petersburg of Russia, Crvena Zvezda mts Belgrade of Serbia, and Gran Canaria of Spain. Mekel is a two-time Israeli League champion - with Gilboa Galil in 2010 and Haifa in 2013, and lifted the Israeli Cup trophy twice with Maccabi in 2016 and 2017. In 42 EuroCup career games with Gilboa Galil, Benetton, Maccabi, Gran Canaria, Zenit and Unicaja, Mekel averages 8.8 points and 4.9 assists. "We wanted a player that gave us game knowledge, and Mekel is a safe bet," Andorra general manager Francesc Solana said. "He is a player that knows the Spanish League and the EuroCup, and that helped us think he is the player we need right now."
