Torneo Città di Roma started in style, with an overtime drama in which hosting team Stellazzurra Basketball Academy Rome edged last year’s champions KK Spars Sarajevo 81-75. Stellazzurra held 46-29 in the third quarter, but Spars rallied to take 55-60 lead with less than 3 minutes to go in the regulation. But Andrea La Torre forced overtime, before the hosts pulled out a win in the extra session by making 10 of 11 free throws. Federico Mussini paced the winners with 27 points plus 7 rebounds, Todor Radonjic collected 14 points plus 11 rebounds, while La Torre finished with 13 points. Edin Atic led Spars with 21 points, Enis Memic had 18 points plus 9 rebounds, while Adnan Arslanagic scored 14 in defeat. Stellazzurra pulled away in the second behind Davide Moretti and Mussini who each hit a three-pointer, while Curtis Nwohoucha helped in the paint on both ends of the floor for 40-29 halftime lead. Margin reached 46-29 early in the third before Memic and Amar Gegic sparked a 0-11 run. Stellazzurra still held 53-47 at the start of the fourth quarter with a put-back from Andreas Carosi, but Spars went on a 2-13 run fueled by Arslanagic, and capped with a triple from Atif Durak for 55-60. The hosts answered with 7 points from Radonjic and La Torre, and after Spars regained the lead through Memic and Arslanagic, La Torre forced overtime with a layup 7 seconds before the end of regulation, 68-68. In the extra session, Mussini’s 6 points and a layup from Radonjic put Stellazzurra up 76-71. Mirsad Pilavdzic had a fastbreak layup that helped get Spars within 1 point, but Nwohoucha and Mussini sealed it from the foul line.
